Pets and divorce (or splitting up): how do you decide who keeps the pets?

Just been reading something on the net......

How do you decide who keeps the pets and/or which pets in such a situation?

Do you/ did you decide beforehand like a pre nup thingy?
and how do you cope with them on your own ?

Im defo keeping mine if the worst ever came to the worst thats for sure

Hmm havent been there myself, but I see many adverts for dogs to new homes cos of divorce..

I have a friend getting a divorce, and she'll be getting the dog. It was her in the beginning who wanted him...

That was the deal when I got divorced...I got the dogs. Basically I told him to take anything he wanted but them.

We have never been in that position but it has been discussed in passing several times when we here of other fighting over their animals. I stay home during the day to care for them so if it ever happened I would have them during the day and he would have them nights and weekends. They would suffer more if access to either of us was cut off we think.
