Pet Dogs And Instinct

How many of your pet dogs have caught their own food?

Loki has always appeared to be prey-driven and I have often wondered (hoping it wouldn't happen!) what he'd do if he actually caught anything he chased.

Well, yesterday it happened in the woods, and he caught, killed and ate a rabbit. It all happened so quickly and efficiently, I was absolutely stunned and had no time to react, not that I could have stopped him and I couldn't be cross as it was so natural to him.

Where did he learn to do that? And to think I'd spent the night before diligently baking tuna biscuits for him .

Funnily enough, one of the lads at work today was saying that Nelly, his elderly Border Terrier caught and killed a cat at the weekend She didn't eat it, just lay licking it

Not many pet dogs will actually kill a cat if they have been socialised properly.

Dusty has caught rabbits a few times but she was taught and took rabbiting when she was small. She will go in a hole after one but it's what she's bred for.

Maddy has found dead birds and carried (much to her amusement, and my dismay, with bird flu now!) them but never killed anything herself.

I don't think (but I wouldn't take the chance) he'd ever kill a cat - his reaction to them is very different. His tail wags madly and he kind of grins and wants to play with/chase them when they spit and run off. It was different with the rabbit, he was all silent and swift. . I'd rather he hadn't but if it's in his instinct ...

My Brodie loves birds. She almost killed Laura's (Vice chairwoman NI society) prize Turkey, she ripped all his flying feathers out and now have discovered she will chase anything that has feathers. Norty girl!
