oozing wound after surgery

Hi, Charlie had acl surgery two weeks ago and had his stitches out 2 days ago. Yesterday a small area of the wound started oozing fluid. I phoned the vet today and he said give it another 24 hours and see how it goes, if it does not stop to take him in. I forgot to ask him should I be bathing it with something ie saline solution or just leave it be (I have to keep dabbing it with kitchen roll to keep it clean)? Also, is this a normal occurance after surgery? I would appreciate your comments.

personnally i would keep it clean with sterlised water.
its better if its coming out then getting infected.
but the cleaner you can keep the wound the better i would think.

If the wound is oozing puss-this would normally indicate an infection.Best to keep the wound clean & dry-then pop Charlie along to your vet and they will likely him a course of antibiotics to clear it up.

Infections do happen despite them (and doctors!) taking care, but like life-sh*t happens!

is the wound open?
or is it coming from where the stitches have been removed?
it could be weeping from them being taken out..is it clear or thick fluid also the colour is a good indictor if it is infected or not.
either way keep it clean and if it doesn't dry up see the vet.

The wound is not open. The liquid is not thick and is clear/pinky with no odour. I'll no doubt take him in tomorrow evening because it has been the same now for 18 hours or so just constant slow oozing.

Thanks for your comments

it sounds like it is just where the stitches have been removed to me.
although it should have stopped by now if its like water thin and clear the holes in the skin where the stitchers have come out should dry up and seal, to start forming a scab.
if it was infected it would be thick, yellow and have a smell to it so it doesn't sound any thing nasty to me.

Hi Leo, yes it is at the top of the wound where the stitches have been removed. The area where it is oozing is slightly raised and pink, but as I say it is not open in fact it is healing very nicely apart from this.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi, just an update on Charlie. He's seen the vet tonight because I was concerned that the fluid had changed it's appearance and thickness. He said he wasn't sure whether it was infected or not but just in case put him on anti-biotics for a week.

Many thanks for your replies.
