5 week old pup

Hi,

I have just brought Harry my new Black Lab puppy home. His breeder said he was 6.5 nearly 7 weeks now i know even this is a little young but she was happy for me to take him as the rest of the litter had already gone to their new homes. On getting Harry home I have looked at the info shes given me and he was infact only born 8/6/11 making him 5 week old.

He seems fine just eating pooping sleeping which is what i expect, but for him being so young is there anything extra i need to give him??? The breeder has given me a little bag of his food which will last about 3 days (3 meals a day) she said i wont be able to get what ever this food is so just get any puppy food but whats best for him being so young???

HELP PLEASE

Three meals a day at 5 weeks old Argh no no no, he should be on at least 4 & probably 5 at this age(well my puppies were usually on 5 meals a day at the same age)a little & often when they are very young.

Unless you are going to feed him a raw diet, then a good quality complete puppy food would be best, the breeder should have given you at least 10 days food so you could change him over gradually over at least 10 days.

Lots of decent foods on the market, Arden Grange, CSJ, James Well Beloved etc etc

I would also boil all his water for a good while to minimize the risk of the runs caused by change of water(but then I do live in an extyremely heard water area)

You might want to give him "scrambled eggs"(no milk just an egg whisked up & cooked gently)for one meal-eggs are a complete meal-for one meal.

No cows milk BTW puppies once weaned don't "need"milk

Best of luck with him, we need photos

Brill thanks I didnt think 3 meals was enough, i know when I had the Cavaliers they were on 4 meals. Hes just had his breakfast so will do the egg next time then work out his feeds for every 4h ish.
I will go to the shops and see what food to get him ASAP then at least hes got a couple of days to change over and just hope and pray a house move, change of food and only 5 week old doesnt upset his little tum.

I will work out how to do pics again and post some up.

I don't suppose you're impressed with the breeder Sarah - I wouldn't be happy at all with the age of him, but it sounds like he's in brilliant hands now.

Great advice from Jodeeuk - nothing to add.

Good luck with Harry

Then why did you take him, if you were not happy with the breeder sending home his pups at 6/5 weeks.

Untill people start making a stand with this sort of breeder, they will contue to carry on their irrisponsibe breeding.

Does the breeder KC and health test his dogs , my guess will be not, if he homes them at 5 weels old.

For goodness sake--the OP has asked for help. She has the pup and it has a chance at a great life.

What you have said is not very constructive.

Whats done is done---lovely little chap BTW---good luck with him and I agree with the extra meals.

Also if you have any friends with older dogs with good temperaments I'd try and mix him ASAP. Sometimes with such young pups they miss out on things they would have been taught by littermates and mum.

Lets not turn this plea for help into the usual dogsey self rightous c---!

That may be so, but then the poster is already re homing one dog because it had tried to nip her daughter,

The poster said herself she was not happy buying from this breeder due to him sending 6.5 week old pups out into the world. Then finds out pup is only 5 weeks old.

Given the poster is an experienced dog owner, my post stands, until people stop giving such breeders money, they will continue to breed.

I hope pup does have a good life and the poster is does not find herself having o re home another dog , due to irresponsible breeding.

poor little mite. I agree with thge socialising. My phoebe segregated herself from her litter at 4 weeks, we tried very hard to get her to play with litter mates and mum but she wouldnt and i blame this for some of her behaviour issues now
