Sore feet

Hi everyone

I am new to the board and wondered if anyone had come across the problem that I have. I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier who is 4 years old. He is having terrible problems with his feet. He gets these big cysts inbetween his toes which swell up and burst - some days he can hardly walk. He has been on numerous courses of ABs and steriods. The vet has no idea what is causing them and now the tablets aren't even helping. He is due to see a specialist but I was wondering if anyone else had heard of this problem?

Thanks

Dont mean to worry you but did you take him for walks on fields where sheep/cows graze?

Hi there

No, he has never been anywhere near any sheeps or cows - why do you ask?

The most common home treatment for interdigital cysts seems to be to soak the feet for approx. 10 minutes in a solution of Epsom salts & warm water, dry thoroughly, and apply Sudocreme between each toe.

Have you considered consulting a homeopathic vet?

Hi again

I have tried soaking his feet but it makes no difference. Hopefully the dermatologist will have some idea what the problem is and if not it has been recommended to try a homeopathic vet.

A couple of years ago he had a grass seed stuck between his toes. He had this removed and ever since then has had these problems with his feet so I am wondering if it could be connected.

Ruby (Boxer) was suffering terribly from the same thing when we adopted her.

Hers was caused by her lowered immune system - she had long courses of antibios to try and clear it up. In the end we boosted her immune response with echinacea and Vit C, and bathed her feet daily with coal tar soap, spraying them afterwards with a tea tree and lavender spray. We also changed her onto chicken NatureDiet food (a food that is cooked in the pouch, and is made purely from chicken, rice, carrots and seaweed extract). It cleared up.

She has flare ups sometimes - she has cancer, so that's what causes her immune system to go wonky - unlikely to be the problem with your dog. However, when we looked into pododermatitis, and interdigital pyoderma, we found that some breeds are extremely prone to it - one of them being the Staffie.

What treatment has he had for this?

Hoping everything works out.

Take care

Kathy

Sam
my staffy was the same !

steroids, creams and antibiotics would clear it up but once the course was finished it would all start again.

We eventually had allergy testing because it was hapening all the time and because it must have been uncomfortable for Gus

Allergy testing showed a sensitivity to housedust mites and flea sensitivity

We were also recommended to do a food trial and he was put on Royal canin Hypoallergenic which cleared it right up

Hes now on a natural diet (meat, veggies, pasta etc) and as long as we keep an eye on which foods he eats hes been fine ever since
He hasnt been back to the vet for about four/five months now

Hi Lel

You are the first person I have found who has a staffie who has had the same problem. Hopefully the lady we see on Wednesday will sort him out. He used to eat Bakers Complete and I have now switched him to organic food. Problem is.... I have two small children who feed him anything and everything

Must admit I was always reluctant to think it was his food as he was on Hills Science plan which wasnt cheap-
I wondered whether it was the places he walked in but it really was due to his food

Please feel free to PM or email me if you need any more advice-
hes the first dog Ive ever had go through thi s

we only switched to a raw/natural diet as we had a pup -
as Gus seems to be sensitive to chicken and rice and there were no foods we could find that suited both of them that didnt contain either chicken or rice

Hope you sort him out as it is quite worrying and frustrating
