Anyone use a halti harness or Sporn Non Pull harness?

As the title suggests I'm looking for opinions on these 2 harnesses if possible please .

Maggie isn't a major puller but I do feel I need a little more control of her when we're walking in busy places like markets etc or if she sees a cat of something.

The Sporn one looks like it might not be suitable to allow free running as the string bit at the top would swing about? Is the halti one ok for this?

What size halti would you suggest for a small collie x?

Any opinions on how you get on with either one are most appreciated. Thank you!

I use a Halti - but I use it for control (my dog can be reactive) not for pulling. And I remove it when she`s off lead as it is possible for them to get a paw caught in it.
For pulling I turn and change direction every time the dog pulls. It takes persistence, but it works.

I use a halti for sam but to be honest although it does give me brilliant control when he acts aggressively to dogs, it does ride up his nose although it was properly fitted. i have to have a rest from it as it has been known to wear away the hair on the nose, not sure about the other sporn, sorry xx and have had no probs with him loose with halti on, apart from him trying to rub the halti off on my leg and the grass!!

Thanks both for the replies. I was swaying more towards the halti, but the harness not the nose piece one.
I was planning on only using it for when we go into town where I need more control as she tends to want to sniff everyone/thing and gets in folks way.
I've been doing the turning and walking the other way when she pulls on her regular walks......my patience is a bit rubbish I must confess and unless we see a cat I tend to let her pull a little .

I don't believe the harness on its own will give much control. Your dog will gain more strength to do what it wants as it would be able to put its full weight behind the harness.

I've heard that the Dogmatic is supposed to be quite good - apparently it doesn't ride up to the dogs eyes and appears to be quite comfortable.

I use a halti for my anatolian shepherd dog because prior to getting it, he had pulled me over a couple of times reacting to the sight of a cat and a fox. I use it as a body harness, nowhere near his face or mouth, and it clips to his collar, so when I need to exert control, I can. I also use it with a trainer lead so I can keep him close if I need to. So far, touch wood, it seems to be working, although I'm pretty sure that if he really wanted to go, he would! lol

For my own personal reasons I don't want to put a headcollar type thing on her, but thank you for taking the time to reply.

Another vote for the halti then! Glad you are having good results. Seems this type of harness is quite popular.

Hi,

I have previously used a halti on all 3 of my dogs and all rescue/foster dogs I've had in my care. I was very pleased with the level of control I had as IMHO - if you control the head, you control the rest of the dog. Obviosuly where the head goes, the rest of the dog must follow!
Also, sometimes I go back to basics with my dogs and use the halti again, although they all can wlk nicely on a lead as a general rule (although I think Yiannis has cmompeltely forgotten how).

If you unclip the main lead then they can be left on when the dogs run free but if allowed to run free mine will run their heads along the groudn to get them off. So as a rule I don't allow this. It just means that I unclip the halti behind the head and underneath where it attaches to their collar and take the whole thing off.

I would recommend them. Using one means your dog's head will be exactly where you want it to be when you walk.

I would also say that a small collie x would almost definitely fit a size 1 or 2 - although it depends on how big the head and snout are. If you consider getting one then take your dog to somewhere like PAH or Just for Pets where your dog is allowed into the shop and ask if you can try one on. Then you'll know for sure. Unless really small, i thik a size 2 would be more apropriate. It can be tightened to fit quite a small size whereas a size 1 is for much smaller dogs generally.

Laura xx

Hi Laura, thanks for this. It was actually the halti harness not the headcollar I was thinking about. The headcollar (although no doubt is very good as you say) is not a route I want to go down because I have bad associations with it from my last dog. Silly I know but I kinda wanted to avoid it.
Really appreciate your reply though!

I use a halti harness on my large dog and find it fantastic. It has 2 rings one at the front accross the chest which controls the pulling when a lead is attatched to it and one on the back like a normal harness.
You can use both together with 2 leads if you wish.
Another plus is its very quick and easy to put on.
