Dumb Question

I'm sorry to ask what is probably a very stupid question, and even more sorry if I'm asking in the wrong section, but could someone tell me what a "troll" is? I've come across the term in Dogsey a couple of times, and I'm afraid I just don't know what it means

A troll is someone who joins forums and makes up stories of owning dogs and tells lies , And causes no end of trouble on forums xxdk

I think (although I may be totally wrong) it's when somebody posts a comment which is deliberately used to cause a reaction, or start a debate.

Bit like 'fishing', you send out a line with a lure or bait on it to catch the fish.

In a forum for example, it's often a loaded question which results in people 'biting' as it were.

Am I right?

I'd say both the above are right.

Someone who joins a forum, is not honest about who they are or what they do etc, and then starts to inflame others with provocative posts.

They may not become apparent to begin with and many are quite good at reeling us in. However, Azz has his troll detector so they usually don't last long.
