They are punished in some way----the only way you can punish anyone is if you are in charge of them and therefore dominant---otherwise you will be dominated by them.

The majority of times with kids and dogs the domination is passive and understood by all parties concerned and adhered to with few problems.

Occassionally it doesn't work and the kids run riot or the dogs fight/argue the point/bite/growl etc.

If it makes you happy to think there is no heirachy and no domination then thats fine, but you are kidding yourself in the interests of being PC.

It's called mutual respect, not dominance

What people usually mean is that the dog is pushy or badly trained, which is a different thing entirely.
My bitch would stand in the middle of the path in the park if she saw a pushchair or wheelchair so they would be forced to go round her. She would (if given the chance) put any dog on their back and stand over them till they submitted. She would go to extraordinary lengths to pee higher than other dogs (and for a bitch that`s not easy). And she challenged me every day of her life till she developed a crippling injury. Then she `allowed` me to take over as boss. I now think she had an excess of testosterone.
But her behaviour didn`t include stuff that CM calls dominant. She walked well, was well trained, didn`t steal etc. She was just convinced that she was top dog.
LOL Mia staired down a tractor one time!! and Ben only learnt to cock his leg from watching her

What is it when a dog bites because it has been told to get off the sofa?

How mutual is that respect?

There are many who would class that as resource-guarding.

Bad manners and lack of training.

Or the human looses the rag and shouts when the dog pulls on the lead when they are in a hurry??

Often BECAUSE of a belief in dominance I see people getting into uness conflicts with their dogs
People assume the dog should just get off the sofa when told - because that shows their dominance - so therefore if the dog dosent get off the sofa they become angry and make that a battle
This makes the dog become MORE defensive if its position because he is now expecting angry human

and at the same time he has not been fully trained what is expected, he is comfy on the sofa and has learnt that showing his teeth gets him to stay in the nice comfy place

Its very easy to train a dog to get off the sofa as a fun trick that they enjoy

When I first got Mia when I asked her to get off the sofa she tensed up and hardened her eyes, I could see a conflict was brewing

I grabbed a handful off treats, chucked them on the floor and asked her to go get them
she happily did
Then the next few days I taught her to get on and off the sofa, made it fun and v rewarding

and I have never had any conflict since

Had I forced her and got angry with her it prob woulndt have taken her long to become a biter

I've never had a reason to tell Teagan to get off the sofa. But if I had a reason to, she is well behaved and would get off.
But thats not me being dominant.
