I do not think that any breed is outright dangerous. I do think, however, that Pit Bulls have the potential to be more dangerous than other breeds based on their strenght and tenaciousness alone. Unlike most other breeds, they were bred orginally to fight, and to fight to the death at that. This type of aggression goes MUCH further than the type of aggression that your average mutt can tap into. A sheepdogs instinct is to herd, a retrievers instinct is to retrieve, a hunting dogs instinct is to hunt and a Pit Bulls instinct is to fight. It does not matter how well they are bred or socialazed, that instinct to fight - and fight until the end - is in the genes.

In the right hands, I am sure they make fine pets. Sadly, in countries where they are not banned, anyone can get their hands on one of these dogs. In the wrong hands ANY breed has the potential to be dangerous, but the problem and potential for disaster is even greater with a breed like a Pit Bull given their history.

I have a rescued American Bulldog, ex-breeding bitch and fighting dog. Now we do not know she is a complete American Bulldog, there is likely to be Pit in her condsidering American Bulldogs have been bred from Pits. She is thr most gentle dog with people and she loves children, BUT as she was not socialised she will happily kill a cat or rabbit, will fight another dog if it gets in her face, BUT she lives with three others dogs including a small one and loves them. She plays with them and loves them. She is in advanced training at our training club, with some discipline and love she is a perfect citizen, aolthough people still cross the road to avoid her. And her jaw and neck muscles are collosal. Shes not dangerous. And neither is any Pit Bull or bull breed.

|Eventually all big and muscular dogs will be banned, and everyh dog will be a small one as they are generally seen as harmless. Pne more reason to get out of Britain before my girl is banned in the future. You may not think this is relevant but i have also met an Argentinian Mastiff, and i will say he was better behaved then my little dog.

I, like many others it seems, feel that the dog's themselves are no more dangerous than any other breed has the potential to be. It is the human influence that is the deciding factor in my opinion.

How you solve this I don't know - I suppose the extreme would be to treat pitbulls as if they were a wild / exotic animal and have to follow the same procedures to own & keep them as you would for say - African Wild Dogs / Wolves. Don't think that would ever happen but maybe a toned down licencing procedure is a possibility?

without a doubt it is bad owners that put the breed into fighting. but as i said in an earlier post pitbulls were bred to be tenacious and powerful dogs and it is those characteristics of the breed that makes them dangerous. bad owners just exploit those traits

I do not believe that pitbulls are inherently dangerous. I believe that the APBT is less dangerous than many other breeds of similar weight.

ATTS seem to agree:

AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER 84.3%

AKITA 74.0%

AIREDALE TERRIER 76.5%

CHINESE SHAR-PEI 70.2%

DALMATIAN 81.8%

DOBERMAN PINSCHER 77.1%

etc., etc...
