You're not wrong there June - for not only are they seemingly hell bent on self destruction, they seem to specialise in doing it to spite you - e.g. if you have two hundred ewes on a hillside and they are all in fabulous condition they will all be out of sight of passers-by. The one and only ewe that is old and scraggy with lumps of fleece hanging off it will spend all day stood by the gate where every passing car can see it, of course it won't have the decency to bog off and die, it'll just hang about for years eating it's head off but still looking like the world's worst cruelty case.
If it can't find a gateway to stand in it'll be found near the busiest stile on the property - so positioned that passing hikers can tut to themselves about it's suffering and malnutrition. This one will also be so blerdy fast that it couldn't be caught by a champion greyhound let alone a poor collie!
So yes! The old saying is definitely correct! lol !

That's the rough outline of what I was told, I also find it can apply to some horses as well
Glad your vocal chords are in good order, all the better to sing carols with, as you do every year from house to house

Bah! Humbug! Carols is it - how quaint! They don,t want to be doing any of that tuneless wittering and moaning at my door. Bad enough that I get the local band annoying me every year with poor renditions of festive favourites, they then expect to be asked in to drink expensive sherry and snack on sweetmeats etc. after which they depart but not before rattling the collection tin under my nose, fully expecting folding money to be deposited therein. Performances such as this can quite take the lustre off your Xmas Baubles.
