I never went to Uni, never had the ambition but I most definately couldnt afford to send my children.

If they wanted to go that badly then I would expect them to fund it themselves but I dont think that a higher education counts for much nowadays unless you've got real high flying ambitions.

Not many self made millionaires went to Uni.

It's not always about becoming a millionaire, imo.

What about getting into science to find a cure? Becoming a vet because you love animals and want to help them? Engineering because you want to create something that will be for people?

I never had the desire to go to uni tbh!
I did 3 1/2 years at college (1 1/2 I paid for myself), and that was enough education for me!

I know a lot of people who went to uni just to 'experience uni life', and complain because they haven't got a lot of money - maybe cos they spend it all on 'uni life'!?

It seems clear to me uni is no longer about excellence so if you want good vets and engineers we need to make sure only the best go to uni in the first place and making people pay for their courses (when they can afford to) seems as good a way as any I have seen suggested.

I agree

Think that we should get back to the time when only the top 10% went to Uni.

Dont see the point where you get a degree in Media studies or other obscure subjects which are are worth nothing in getting a job.

I don't see why anyone should have the right to dictate to anyone else what level of education they are allowed to have

Says who?

A degree is what you make...there is a girl four doors down from me who is an Oxford graduate and is unemployed.

Pay upfront...no loans? that would rule out probably 95% of people of ever going to University.

But that is the whole POINT of this thread, there is NO charge at the point of entry!

ANYONE can go to university provided they meet that institution's entrance criteria.

They only pay back if and when they earn more than £21k.
