how my dogs have saved my life? how about my mali who, because of his protection training protected me from a knife attack and someone breaking in. it did its job. or my retriever bitch when i was knocked to the ground by an angry ram and they all charged at me, she fought them off getting injured herself.

a check chain is used alongside encouragement to teach a dog how to walk. how many of you have trained dogs over say, 3,4,5 years old, often bull breeds who are so stubborn and set it there ways that no amount of encouragement, treats etc will bring it on.

this isnt the right place to find people with real dogs is it.?

proper dogs????????????
you know nothing of my dogs-how well they are trained etc so how can you judge? your retriever was trained to protect you from rams? really? how did you manage to train that?
just because you SAY that you are a professional trainer does not mean that you are better than the rest of us-there are numerous people on dogsey that are dog trainers.

im sorry to come across so strongly on my first post but this is for your own benifit really.
I haven't read the whole thread yet but will continue to read it once having made this reply:

What an ignorant retort! I'm referring to the content as well as the manner!

get real please.
How many 16 week old dogs, regardless of breed, do you know of that would be able to fend off a wolf and tackle an aggressive bloke (or woman - don't want to be sexist now) This is a PUPPY not a 3, 4 or 5 year old fully grown dog with aggression or behavioural issues.

Mines is Lentil with croissant please

With All Due respect, i was asking advice for my puppy not 3,4,5 year old dogs who are stubborn, he is in no way set in his ways..treats have taught him already to..."leave" "stay" "come see" and "away" treats have also taught him to toilet outside...treats are a fun way of teaching for both Avek and myself....i am just greatfull your advice was not one of the first i came across...

Please do not ask us to get real, how many 16 week old dogs, regardless of breed, do you know of that would be able to fend off a wolf and tackle an aggressive bloke (or woman - don't want to be sexist now) This is a PUPPY not a 3, 4 or 5 year old fully grown dog with aggression or behavioural issues. A check or choke chain could cause serious damage in the wrong hands to a young developing dog.

Mines is Lentil with a lightly toasted croissant please

hmm you lot are a sensitive bunch hey? obviously a 16 week old dog could not fend off a wolf or the like, i wasnt talking about the particular, i was talking about the breed.
ok OP, what do your dogs do?
my retriever bitch wasnt trained to fight off rams, she is capable of driving tem though, as i needed a dog to do this and at the time i didnt have a sheepdog. she saw me being trampled and came to help. simple.

IMO you do not need headcollars or check/choke chains. They all may have there place but IMO they are not necessary especially on a pup so young. I have a staffy x who pulled like a steam train, who lunged at other dogs, who I was frightened to walk and Iwhen I did he was walked in a halti....then someone trained ME, not my dog ME, in the space of 2 hours he was waklking on a loose lead happily and obeying commands, within 2 weeks he was playing with other dogs both on and off lead. And all that without a choke/check chain in sight. All thanks to a dogsey member (Cheers Shona) who gave me excellent advice.

No not so much sensitive as don't want a concerned new member put off posting because they feel they are being BLAMED for a dog they have had 4 weeks being nervous. My staffy x wasn't trained to help me when I can't mange things but he does it not because he thinks oh she needs help I better do that but because through repitition and praise he associates certain tasks with praise (just like good training {again JMO})
