im having the same problem with phoebe, when she had the torsion in december her anal glands went a bit mental because of the torsion, shes had to have them emptied twice since aswell. Im hoping it will calm down as she is 5 and never had anal gland problem before. But phoebe being odd she seams to like it being done (i do not do it - i cant even be in the room and she bathed before ill pick her up it makes me sick)

Our vet charges £7.
But I'm going to do it myself from now on (I'll remember to use a tissue next time)
Fortunately Reggie's is not that smelly unlike Maggie's which smells VILE, we once took her to the vet but he said she is emptying them herself even though it does tend to be on the sofa!

Thanks, that seems good value. I’ll make enquiries at my local groomers.

She was really bad having them emptied at the vets, (it took three to hold her) so trying anything was better than having to have them emptied regularly.
How often do you give protexin Pro-fibre?

Thanks in advance. x.

[QUOTE=Angie1966;2466309]Owwwww much?!
Blimey, at that price I'd definitely be donning my own latex gloves! [/Q

I’ve tried to do this myself but was not successful unfortunately, would like to learn how.

My vet talked me through it when he was doing my old boy a few years ago. He had a feel to make sure they required emptying and at my request he allowed me to empty them under his supervision.

Maybe you could ask your own vet or groomer to do the same?

Thanks Angie, I'll see what my vet says.

He was getting frequent raw chicken wings as a supplement for ages but it wasn't helping. It's been said that maybe the bones are too soft (compared with other bones) to have the desired effect?
I wonder sometimes if he's just got dodgy anal glands and nothing I try will make a difference...

I've only ever had one dog that had a problem with it and that was just one time when she was about 6 years old and after being on medication that made her stools runny for weeks and weeks. I'd taken her to the vet coz she was 'scooting on the floor'. Vet squeezed them out and told me that if their stools are hard enough they usually manage to keep their glands clear themselves at the same time as they strain to poo?

Never had a problem with it with any of my old GSDs, and not with the 2 yr old min pin I have now and she is easy to check for it - her bum being clearly on show!

I used to think when I saw dogs doing the bum scooting thing that they had itchy bums from worms! Mine didn't do it so I'd never asked about it until that one time I had a dog that did.

Really surprised to read that some dogs need this seen to every few weeks?
It's not something I ever anticipated as being a big problem either. Strange how some dogs are more prone.

Blimey, that's a bit steep!

It has to be smelled to be believed Hope Phoebe's are back to normal soon.

Izzy has it on her evening meal, one level scoop a day and the scoop comes with the tub. She is only 18K in weight though so it may be more for bigger dogs....can't remember, but I'm sure the instructions will be on the tub.
