I must also mention though he used to have a problem weeing when we went for a walk as in he wouldn't wee on the lead, only off the lead which is impossible to do when we take him around the block as he can;t be let off the lead! He would hold it then do it in the back garden! So, in the end I decided to try an extendable lead & it worked!!! I'm sure he is playing mind games!!
does he get any offlead exercise at all? i have a 6 month old jack russell pup and she gets on average 2 walks a day, both offlead.

they are clever little dogs that's for sure.

i'm still confused as to why he is fine overnight in the kitchen and not in the daytime?

What sort of pad are you putting in his crate ?

Are you using a puppy training pad ?

Why is he in the garage in the mornings ?

I did used to leave him in my kitchen but he decided the cupboards looked tempting to chew! He has stopped teething now so I was thinking of moving him back in there and also before the cold weather arrives but didn't want him to reck the kitchen!

I tried puppy training pads but he kept chewing them up & eating them! I put a fitted mat in his cage and sometimes towells when he has soiled the mat.

He does have walks off lead when we are in the woods as when he sees another dog he will run after it so when we walk him around the streets he is always on the lead. However, I do take him off when we are on a field.

I am also confused as to why he is ok at night & not in the day??!!!

Going by what you have said, I would put his crate in the kitchen, do NOT put any newspaper/pads in the crate (my girls have big fabric beds that fill their crates) and walk him before hand. Then see what happens.

I will try the crate in the kitchen. The only reason it is in the garage is because we don't have a very big kitchen & it would have to moved in & out all the time.

ah ok! i just wondered what his walks were like and i agree, i wouldn't let lily off the lead on her street walks either!

i think labradork is offering some good advice there and when i leave my pup, she always has a stuffed kong. she never gets it at any other time and i think it sets up a good association with being left. i also leave the radio on. think both my dogs are big fans of radio 1 now! also having a walk before you leave him is a good idea.

i stuff it with part of her daily allowance of kibble and sometimes i'll put a bit of chappie in the top to make it abit of a longer job to get it out. also it was recently suggested to me that a little mashed potato mixed with the kibble every so often is good.

i still have a puppy kong for her as the bigger ones would hold too much food for her little tum!

Where did you get your BT from? (PM if you prefer).

My sister has a BT who was very difficult to housetrain and who also absolutely loves the company of other dogs and would always chase off after them on walks and not want to come back Thankfully now she is a little older (she is 17 months old) she has calmed down considerably and is housetrained on most occasions, although still does excited wees when she sees someone she knows She will also come back most of the time, but her recall still leaves a bit to be desired when she sees other dogs. As with most terriers, I think you have to be very persistent with your recall training, never give up (even when they are seemingly deaf to your calls) and eventually you will get there.

Regarding his house-training, I would suggest to try bringing his crate indoors and also give him plenty of opportunity to go outdoors - plenty of short walks, time in the garden etc.

WOW! You're sister's BT sounds exactly like mine!!! Everything you have said is Max down to a 'T'!! I am going to persevere as I love him to bits!
