Pidge do you have the eye exam sheet, if so did it tell you exactly what type of Retinal Dysplasia was present?

eg is it inherited or An acquired problem, did he mention how bad the damage is?
EG..
Patchy abnormal discolourations
Folds in the retina
Ridges in the retina
Rosettes
Detachment of the retina - focal or complete

I think I would also ask the vet who gave Woody drops before why they didn't pick this up then.
Do you know the whole experience was so awful I just couldn't wait to get out of there.

Well I have wondered about a second opinion but he didn't really give me any reason to doubt his diagnosis. I just didn't want to talk to him anymore about it.

No print out as such, but he showed us the lesions in his eye, said it was inherited and that it was all fine. Said the only thing would be a fail for breeding but we're obviously not doing that anyway.

Should I be questioning this further then?

The fact you did not get on with him, should come second, you have paid your fee,and he is the " expert" .. Woody health is what is important, and it seems a shame to come away from the consultation, without all the information you could have, due to you not liking the specialist.

Why not phone the clinic back up, and ask to speak to the ophthalmologist (is that the correct term) again.... explaining that , you would like to go over the diagnosis, and you have forgotten what he told you.

it happens all the time, and they are usually understanding in these matters.

I know the one I saw with Bandit was... she told me "if I needed to ask, anything", to give her a ring!!

Pidge, I am finding this all very confusing to be honest. Now i am not getting at you, and I realise that Woody is your first dog, but I have read many posts from you and you come across as a intelligent person, one for instance that if someone told you that Woody had a eye condition, that you would of immediately looked on any internet site to seek knowledge.

I personally would of thought most people would of asked the Specialist what it all entailed not suggest that he was scatty and a nonce and ''you couldn't be bothered'' or you don't wish to talk about him anymore.

I agree with what has been suggested ''ring them back and ask it all to be explained again''.

The Specialist who Reah see at Willows referrel Centre, charges £197 just for the consult.......thats without anything else, and I, for one expect for that amount of money to have things explained in ways I understand. I know with the condition that has been suggested Woody has this can progress to stages 2 and 3, therefore he would of said about another eye test annually so that this can be monitored.
I'm sorry but if it was me, I wouldn't really have the attitude of ''I can not be bothered to talk about him'' I'd be asking more questions.

Sorry I am not getting at you, but for me this all sounds very confusing.

Best wishes with Woody in the future.

Yes, I know what you're saying don't worry. I just didn't feel the need as my friend and I both were convinced by him that it was fine and that was that.

I will look into it further though and call him back now.

That's a good point Shona,
I remeber a friend of mine who had a similar thing happen, wasn't a ESS but same thing, anway he got a complete run down, print out and everything,
Perhaps Pidge you should ring back and ask for one.

I think Pidge, that what Steph here has said makes a lot of sense, Your Woody's eyes are important to him and you, wouldn't it be a good idea to get the facts down on paper then you have that for future reference, As Steph said, this condition can progress.
If I were you I would be asking a lot more questions. I'm with steph on "I can not be bothered to talk about him" I know it's been traumatic but at the end of the day, Woody's health is all that matters.
Good luck
Elaine
