it is a Japanese fighting dog, also called Tosa Ken and jap Sumo. they are usually red in colour and are a mastiff breed.

Is it similar to a Shar-pei?

No Tam they are very different, the are large mastiff type dogs one of four breeds with the misfortune to appear on the UK DDA banned list. A magnificent breed.
