Though i do worry it will encourage dog thieves maybe will invest myself in just a plain 'dogs running loose please shut the gate'. does anyone know where i can get one from? i cant seem to ever find one

The last time I saw a discussion of these signs, I think that it came to the conclusion that an uninvited/unwanted visitor, who tried to make a case about a bite, would have a tough time making it stick. Basically, it comes down to your having a "duty of care" regarding people on your property (which includes, believe it or not, burglars!).

My sign, above the front door, is a terracotta plaque saying "Cave Canem" (Latin: "Beware of the Dog"), which doesn't count, as it makes no legal statement in English!

Another thing to recognise is that there is a difference between "Beware of the Dog" and "Be aware of the Dog". the latter being merely a statement that there is a dog about.

I did think of making an adaptation to sign that I saw once on the island of Islay, about cows. So, substituting "dogs" for "cows", it would read -

"Chasing dogs will be our fate
if you do not shut this gate"

This is interesting. I have a 'Beware of the dog' sign on my back gate. I also have a doorbell and a post box, so no excuses for anyone coming in unannounced.

I have these cause I dont have a front door.

How would I stand legally ?

Legally 'Beware' implies that you are aware there is a danger - so if your dog DID bite then you have already admitted that he/she had the potential - that's what the law says. Better off with 'Be Aware' or 'Burgle me and I'll haunt you'

im going to a show on sunday, last time they had all kinds of signs dogs running free etc so i am going to get a new sign from there,it just say that i have dogs on ground rather than the word beware.
not that i think any one would attempt to nick him,he scares them by his size alone.
i will find out what the address etc is then post it on here for any one who wants a sign,i know you can get all sorts and with pic of your breed on them.
