Not the easiest thing to explain, however....
In 3/ (j)
You are multiplying two brackets
e.g (a-b) (c-d) = (axc)(+ax-d)(-bxc)(-bx-d)
which simplyfied = (+ac)(-ad)(-bc)(+bd)
So for 8p2 - 14pq + 5q2
The first multiplication is done on the first part of each bracket.
so to get 8p2 we need a factor of 8 i.e 2x4, or
4x2 and as it is P2 we need P in both as well.
So we know it is either (2p*)(4p*) or (4p*)(2p*).
The last part 5q2 tells us it is a factor of 5 i.e 5x1 or 1x5 and again it is squared so is must be either (*5q)(*q) or (*q)(*5q).
As 5q2 is +ve we know that the sign in the middle of both brackets is -ve. (-x-=+).
After that you just need to work out which combination gives you -14pq.
In this case you get -10pq (2px-pq) - 4pq (-qx4p).
I hope this helps a bit and hasn't confused you more.
