Thanks everyone. Yes, they are devastated, especially after learning that they should have known what it was...

I always think of dry kibble when I think of bloat, because it's said to expand with water in their stomach. To be honest, it never dawned on me much with table food.

How terrible... What started off as a good evening ended in misery.
Your Auntie must be feeling awful at the moment... but she must remember its not her fault... these things can happen, and and she musn't blame herself.

Chester only gets feed by me or Ian and by nobody else

I also meant to add that this is the type of thing that should go into a dog ownership exam or you could have a new section dedicated to providing information maybe not as a question but you could have essential information for large, medium, small and toy breeds with people being able to contribute information such as this. What do you think Azz seems like a very worthwhile idea this way all the more experienced owners could advise and share information about problems specific to their breed or their size of dogs in general etc???

Sounds good! I think this question could go in the exam - especially if bloat is relevant to all dogs?

We also have a hints and tips section - could it go there too?

I agree Laura, that's a great idea. There were 25 people at the party and not one had ever heard of bloat. 1/2 of them have large dogs or have had them. To be honest, I never learned about bloat until I researched Mastiffs, etc. and I've always had labs who are also at risk... Not everyone reads about their breed unfortunately. I know I didn't until I found mastiffs.

Thanks again everyone.

Please be aware.

It is not only food that is the culprit. A big drink of water after exercise can also cause bloat.

Not sure Gems, it is most deep chested breeds that are at risk.

Saying that my vet has only saw 2 cases in 3 years. Which puts my mind at rest a bit.
