I sympathize I really do.

I had one about 7 years ago which nearly sent me insane, I went to the Dental Hospital and they took the tooth out, I can not describe the relief.

It wasn't a nice experience I can tell you but the releif was heaven

oh god i sympathise totaly! think all but 4 of my teeth have had abcesses to i feel your pain, i always find hot water bottle or a microwave heat pack blocks out some of the pain, clove oil is good, anbesol gel or oil is good, making up some warm very salty water and holding it in your mouth helps to bring the abcess to the surface and i have also soaked a cotton wool pad in tea tree oil and kept it over the affected gum and tooth
in the past people have suggested making a painkiller tablet into a paste and applying it to the tooth but i have never tried it! i have also put neurofen gel all over the affected side of the jaw but only when realllllyyyyy desperate
hope you get at least some relief xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Take 600mg Ibuprofen, then two hours later take 1000mg paracetamol, two hours after that Ibuprofen, rinse and repeat until you can get to a dentist, preferably as soon as possible

Yep I've had it too - I would have gladly shot myself in the head to get rid of the pain, never felt anything like it in my life!!

I've had two root canal's done.....never again, it didn't work for me, and I ended up having the teeth removed. Now I tell them I don't want root canal, just take the tooth out.

Hope you're feeling better soon xx

I'm sure you'll find an emergency dentist open in your area over the weekend..........

I really do sympathise - I've had an abscess all last week (finally starting to go!), and I spent each and every night sitting in the kitchen at midnight, or the early hours, with the dogs, crying with the pain. I even contemplated finding a pair of pliers and pulling the damned tooth out myself.

I can only suggest what's already been mentioned - warm salty water (ugh, makes me heave every time I rinse my mouth with it), paracetamol and I find having a lightly warmed hot water bottle next to my face helpful.

I'd try and see if you can visit an emergency dentist, too.

I can really sympathise with you too, I've had a lifetime of these darned abcesses so ended up having all the back ones taken out because I just couldn't stand it anymore, so I got half dentures instead, sooooo much better, no more pain!

I used to take some hot, salt water as hot as you can stand it without wanting to spit it out, but I mean reeeeally hot from a boiled kettle, bit of salt, and over the sink, keep it in your mouth holding it over the side your tooth is infected. You will feel the relief immediately, but sometimes, as soon as you spit it out, it comes back with avengeance. If it does, then there's nothing else for it, but to take yourself off to A&E where they have an emergency dentist and get the begger out. You're already on ab's and they are very reluctant to take out a tooth until the infection has gone (coz it can suddenly spread like wildfire - had that bit too once!), but sometimes, needs must. Do the same with a lump of cotton wool and stuff it next to that tooth as hot as you can stand, if there's any kind of opening anywhere, it could drain it for good! My dentist used to drain mine sometimes.

I tried the root canal route once, 2 hours in the dentist chair, lots of money, but back to an abcess a few weeks down the line, but worse, much, much worse.

I had one soooo bad once, that the whole side of my face swelled up like a tyson punch, my eye had disappeared and the dentist couldn't even open my mouth that side to look at it! Oh boy, was that one painful, so I really do feel your pain you poor thing. Good luck, not much else you can do.

Thankyou so much all of you. I can't afford to go to an emergency dentist unfortunately as it costs the earth and I just don't have the money
I think I've managed to get some of the disgusting pus out by pressing on the abcess and sucking on my tooth!!! It left a nasty taste in my mouth but it feels better now. I've actually got some relief! Hopefully now I've managed to drain some out it will be more comy until monday. It's a good job my lad was upstairs coz the language that came out of my mouth was shocking!
Thankyou all for your support. I think starting the metronidazole has helped a lot...and I know not to drink on it! xxxxx

I had awful tooth ache recently-I did find a gel helpful called "Orajel" that is an anaesthetic gel you buy from chemists and that combined with painkillers helped me cope with the pain. I had the tooth removed in the end as I couldn't face the root canal treatment again.

I'm sorry, i didn't see the bit a bit about metrinidizole!! (sp)

That is the strongest and worst antibiotic there is I think??

Luckily I am allergic to it......

I have had breast cancer twice and before they gave me the right diagnosis, have been tried on this drug. It's evil if you don't agree with it.

I feel so sorry for you. Please don't try that tot of whisky I advised

If you go to an emergency walk in centre (not A&E), they will send you to see a dental specialist and you will get your treatment for free. (trust me - it works). My brother in law is a dental technician, and I have done it.

Hope you are feeling better soon x
