we are not sure how long the pup will be left for, hopefully not at all if my fella gets nights like he has requested, we will be both on shift work so hopefully if we can work it right the dogs will only be left for 3 hours and on the days it will be longer his mum said she can come in.

Too many "ifs" for me. What happens if your partner does infact have to work days rather than nights? then what? you can't leave a 6 week old puppy for two 3-4 hour periods (which a typical working day would be, with an hour inbetween).

Even if he is able to work nights, leaving a 6 week old puppy alone for 3 hours is going to impact toilet training in a big way. A pup that young will be physically unable to hold it for that amount of time.

Why did you get a puppy at 6 weeks anyway?

It can be done as I've managed it . When I got Ludo a friend was staying over and was meant to be home daytimes with him but things changed and he ended up home alone. I was working in an office where dogs were not allowed so no chance of him coming with me

It took lots of work making sure he was only ever left for shorter periods and when he was he had plenty to keep him occupied and had been tired out playing first. Also I pretty much killed myself socialising him when I got home and I had other dogs to puppy sit him and keep him entertained.

My mum and dad helped me out to ridiculous degrees and it was very hard work for all of us but we managed it

Wouldn't advise it if there is any other way though as you would have to be very very committed and it's such hard work. Can your parents maybe have the pup for the day till he's a bit older? or a dog sitter?

i got suki and 6weeks, a lot of pups leave them mum at that age.
my fella will be leaving the house at one and i will arrive back at 4 so the pup will be on his own for three hours a day 3-5 days a week. on these days my fellas mum can come in the middle so will only be left for 1.5 hours at a time

I have never heard a pup leaving mum at 6 weeks.

Did you get him from a breeder.?

i know house training will be harder.

but can it be done both working full time with a puppy??

I did it with 2 puppies, Jed was alone and then when Flynn came along he had Jed for company. I do think Jed suffered a bit more with boredom as we had problems with him and not with Flynn.

No they don't. Accidental or not, if anyone with half a brain (I mean the person who you got Suki from, not you) knew anything about dogs and puppies they should know that a pup will not be fully weaned until at least 8 weeks. Any breeder on here will tell you that.

I think 6 weeks is too young for a pup to leave its mum but I have a friend who is a very reputable and well known breeder and she lets her pups go at 7 weeks if there is another dog at home - a lot of the breeders do this I think. Also if she brings another dog into her pack she has them round about 6/7 weeks.
My personal opinion is that I wouldn't have got a pup in these circumstances and it seems like the poster is in agreement, but having got him now perhaps the best thing is to go all out and work around his needs for a few months, i.e. pet sitters/walkers/relatives helping out. If it
was an accidental litter then I can't see the original owner being that keen to take the little one back. The poster is obviously concerned about the needs of the pup so good luck with it all.............

Flynn was from an accidental litter but I collected him at 8 weeks. We once had a family dog that came to us at 4 weeks old (My dad paid £5 for her out of the local paper, he didnt know she was too young to leave her mum) and she turned out to be nervous, destructive and had various other non desirable behaviours.

My friend who breeds GWP's likes her pups to leave at 5 weeks old as she claims that their new owner can teach them far more than staying with the litter teaches them. I strongly disagree and wouldnt get a pup younger than 8 weeks old.
