It would be a good idea to learn to check and empty the anal glands yourself, it is a quick and easy procedure that takes half a minute .
Thanks, I will ask the vet about learning how to do that tomorrow. Montys never usually had any troubles with his glands and it does seem odd that it's come out of nowhere - what causes anal abcesses?

Will definitely get to the vets asap as it's better to be safe than sorry.

If it is in it's early stages can they treat without surgery then?
Star has had two abscesses in the past and both were successfully treated with strong antibiotics. A quick procedure to flush out the glands was suggested if the antibiotics did not clear it completely.

Good luck at the vet

Thanks everyone for the advice and well wishes.

Monty is booked in at the vets for 5:30 this evening so will let you all know how he gets on. I'm just hoping he doesn't lick it too much whilst I'm out at work today otherwise he'll have to have a buster collar on this afternoon.

Well the vets verdict is in and thankfully he doesn't think it's an abscess. He said both his glands were ok and not over-full or anything.

So he thinks it may be an eczema type sore and has given us some gel/cream that needs to be applied round his bum twice a day - lucky me!

He will also have to wear his buster collar whilst we are out as him licking it will make it worse which is a pain but hopefully Rich will be home on Thursday to keep an eye on it.

Gel is to be applied for a week and see how we go but am just very glad the vet doesn't think it's an abscess. Was also glad it was the same vet that finally got Monty's head thing sorted so i have a lot more trust in him.
