I don't think it has anything to do with the 'd' word which is often used to explain just about every kind of behaviour.
If you watch the dog closely and note when a particular behaviour occurs you can often see the reason for it.
Dogs will sometimes use a foot to instigate play (mine does it with her toys too ), so you could say they are trying to get your attention.
My dog does it if she wants my feet to move

sometimes it because she wants to go out/or it is her meal time/ or wants me to get up from the chair and play .
At the same time as placing a foot on mine she will look intently at my feet then up at my face.
Many of my previous Schnauzers did the same thing.
