If the mother has any retained afterbirth or even a puppy left inside then the consequences for her could be fatal. Its easy getting mum and 8 newborns in a car, its when they get older the fun starts!!!!
Just my opinion, I have actually had that situation with 2 dead pups inside as she was in slow labour and they died inside, so vet trip and an injection and they came out, but she had an infection then and very poorly for a few days, so it can happen, I could tell there was something left inside, but thats because I knew, but someone who has never had this experience, and never expected to, could miss it.
