There are many different ways to deal with it though and plenty of experienced people on here to help you along. I know quite a few people who have dogs with horrendous hip scores but with good management their dogs live very healthy, happy lives.
Thanks Emma, I've had an NI with HD , but in all honesty it hit me real hard with Khal, hes just a baby! BUT Ive pulled myself round & now we're onwards & upwards xx

It confuses me (not difficult at my age) having all these different threads, having more than one dog!!!

But I will know who to come to as soon as they start to show signs

Hope your two are as well as can be. They both have an excellent nurse !!

@ confusion, I confuse myself 99% of the time!
This nurse is a tired girly

Well just a quick update on whats happening with Khal, I was at vets today with Ruby, we had an appt with the fella Barry that owns the practise. He gave Ruby the all clear for her mouth Yay! BUT he was also very concerned about Khal & spoke more about him than anything.

He told me he would like to perform a procedure on Khal that not many veterinary surgeries do now, with todays modern technology theres not much need. He wants to open up the inside of each of Khals back legs & manouvre (or something) the bit of muscle he has there in both legs. In turn this should read just the femur, which is anything but in the correct position in Khals legs.
Hes told me the prcedure will take no longer than an hour, recovery time will be approx 4 weeks, in those 4 weeks I need to exercise Khal & try to get him to have big long stretches as hes being exercised. Soooo this is another option open to us, & to be honest I'm feeling rather inclined to take it.
If we try this & it doesnt work then I still have the opportunity for every other treatment that has been mentioned. Basically, we have nothing to lose from it.

xx

Glad to hear about Ruby

Tbh, reading about the procedure on Khal, I think I would take this option. I know we hear a lot about GAs, but they have come a hell of a long way over the past few years, and Khal has age on his side.

He has a wonderful nurse to look after him, and pander to his every need. Your vet sounds as if he knows what he is talking about. Some can sound a bit sketchy can't they?

You will make the right decision, whichever option you choose to take.

He will make a good recovery, one step at a time.

Just catching up on how things are going with Khal and Rubes. Glad to hear Ruby's mouth is now fine she must have been in pain with that great big lump on her face poor girl.

Glad to hear too, that your vet has come up with a new idea about Khal, and if I were you, I'd certainly be taking up this option, as you say, you have nothing to lose. Do they do this on humans I wonder? Is it the fact that he is still growing, that the vet thinks by repositioning this muscle on the femur it will pull it round as it grows into the right place? Have you Googled about this and seen any documented results - might be worth it just to give you more of an idea of what it entails and how successful it has been in any trials. What were the other options left for you with him? It sounds good to me, and I'm sure he's a good vet, so what have you got to lose - nothing! What about that specialist though, have you seen him yet? I think you ought to see him before making any final decision don't you?

You head must be in a spin, but at least now, he's given you a way forward Bev, so all the best with whichever route you choose, I'm sure Khal can be helped one way or another.xxx

Thanks Mrs B, I can't google it as I can't remember what the procedure is called We are back at the vets on the 20th , theyre going to explain it all in plain english for me & actually show me what theyre gonna do.
I've decided that he is getting it done, if it doesn't work then no harm done.
I have been on the phone to the specialist & had a discussion about Khal , he says he has seen the xrays, BUT the only thing he would push for is a hip replacement. I dont want to go down that route, plus I was happy with the care my vet gave Inky throughout her HD, so after alot of thought, for now I'm going to plod on with the way things are & have further talks with the vet on 20th xxx

If it is what I think it is, then it was one of the procedures done on my daughter's right hip in between major surgeries on her left hip. It meant that she did not have to go through all the major surgeries on her right hip as well.

Incidentally she had her first major surgery at the age of ~14 months, was not finally discharged from the hospital [where she had been going as an outpatient after the initial year she spent in there] until she was 17 years old.

She is now 43½ years old and only just starting the osteoarthritis they reckoned would hit her in her 30s.

Just an update guys, Khal has been to the vet today & as I thought, the vet confirmed previcox & flexivet are doing nothing for him He is still in so much pain

I've made the decision for him to get the op done the vet had told me about while I was there with Ruby. The vet said it would be best doing it asap. There are risks to the op, but I feel we need to try this. It won't cure ofcourse, but if it works, it could ease his pain & discomfort an awful lot and after everything hes been through, its worth a shot. The tablets Khal is on are also being changed, but I dont know what to yet.

Send him your vibes guys, hes booked in for 8:30 on Thursday morning & am scared. How daft am I

xx

eta-If some-one can, can they change the thread title to show new update plz, thankyou x

We are all scared when our dog has to have an op, but I am sure that you have made the right decision. As you said, you have nothing to lose and perhaps so very much to gain.

Good luck for Thursday Khal, and ask your vet to give your mum some tranquilisers

Oh don't you just envy all those people out there with dogs who have nothing wrong with them, they must have such stress free lives!
