working jrt clubs

can any one help i looking to join a clubs to work my j.r.t . clubs got to be in uk ty

catching rats ect he is a young dog and would like to take him out with an experience group of j.r.t's.

I'm not sure if there are any specific clubs, but I will enquire for you. May I ask if you are a youngster or not? there may be clubs for younger people.

You dont need to teach ratting, its a natural instinct on a Jack Russell. Mine are all self taught, but do work alongside other dogs too. Here are a few pics of them digging for Rats (they may be removed though, seems there is still no yes or no on whether we can talk about the work our breeds were designed for)

im not youngster gyp is he 16 weeks wot age would u start to work a jrt he is aready alert and knows when rats are in my garden.reason i want to know is its a naturel thing for jacks to work and dont want to deprive him.this is my first jrt and really its to educate me more than him. i wouldnt like to work him too early and him encounter a rat and lose confidence or come 2nd best hope this makes sense.

Firstly don't work your dog because you dont want to "deprive" him, that really is not a good reason, mine work to control the vermin situation on peoples property, they provide a service. Rats are a HUGE problem and can be found in stable yards, farms etc.. most owners on these properties will welcome the use of Terriers to provide a more humane solution to the problem than the use of traps and poison etc..

To get into it a bit more, I would suggest you visit Game fairs and Lurcher and Terrier shows in your area, you will meet loads of likeminded people who will be pleased to help you. Buy the "Countrymans Weekly" from good newsagents each Thursday, there is a list of upcoming events in it, there is sure to be one that is near enough to you.

Your pup is just a baby, yet (post us a pic so we all can see!) just concentrate on socialising and basic obedience and enjoy him while he grows, at around 5/6 months you will see his confidence grow, encourage him gently, dont force him into anything, you should find he will be fine.

You should also make efforts to see he is stock safe, find a farmer that will allow you to walk his fields while your pup is on a lead, get him used to sheep, Cows and horses, the last thing you need is a dog that cannot be controlled in an environment you are working in, and dont forget if he worries Sheep, he can be shot!

ty for reply i'm in brum (birmingham) plenty of rats here lol on a serious note i take on board wot u say makes sense. Will look for countrymans weekly, like i say its more to educate myself so yr info will be useful ill post pic soon thanks again

Very nice puppy! The Midland Game fair is on next weekend, 17th and 18th of September, at Weston Park, Stafford, less than an hour from you and is the biggest one of the year. Try to go on Sunday, there are Terrier events on, and a big open Terrier show where you can meet loads of people and ask advice. Its a great show and well worth a visit, I will be there on the Sunday too.
