Advice re operation on knee joint

Took Jake to the vets today about his hind leg, which he has been carrying on and off since we homed him last November. Already had it checked by a vet when we first got him but he said there was nothing wrong. However he started carrying it almost permanently last week so OH took him in.

Vet said he's got bad arthritis and that the knee joint has moved, meaning an operation to remove part of the bone . He reckons this will fix the problem and the alternative is painkillers for the rest of his life.

Has anybody had this operation done to their dog? Did it work?

Hi Flickitysplit poor Jake sorry to hear he is in pain. I am not sure what will be involved in this particular operation, I guess there is bone rubbing on bone, has the vet taken x-rays, if so he will have assessed the extent of the damage and is the best one to judge the suitability of an operation. Remember you can always ask for a second opinion from another vet or for a referral to a RVC small animal hospital .

...not sure of the exact nature of your dogs problem...did the vet name it ?Could it be a luxating patella, if so there is a lot of information on the internet about it, here is one piece

..a number of members dogs have had successful operations for cruciate ligament injuries, this may not be the same problem your dog has but it involves an extensive operation on the knee and may give you an idea of what an operation on the knee involves

Thanks Minihaha - I didn't take him unfortunately the OH did so I'll have to ask him what the name of the condition is. Gonna have a look at these articles and ask the vet some more.

Cheers again. I appreciate it !!!!! I'll let you know what comes of it.
