Weird insect in house. What is it?

Hi guys, strange question but Roxy came trotting through 2 days ago with this big beatle thing in her mouth. She dropped it and it flew into the wall and then i squashed it (sorry insect lovers)

But this thing was just bigger than an apricot pip, brown and had a pointy tail (and could fly!). Then again yesterday 2 of them flew into our kitchen, they are pretty scarey things when they fly towards you!

Roxy caught one and i threw it out. But what are they and where are they coming from?

Stag beetle maybe? The largest British beetle but it doesn't really have a pointy tail but they do fly round a bit randomly, mostly at night. Declining in numbers so try not to squash too many

Good job it's not one of these:

The largest known specimen of Titanus giganteus measures 16.7 cm - imagine one of those hitting your car windscreen art night !

Fortunately, they don't live in the UK.

oooh I really don't like beetles and certainly not ones that fly. But you're braver than me Nathalie cos I couldn't kill one due to the nosie it would make (oh and of course because it would so wrong to - if my sister is reading this).

I usually scream (pitifully of course) and get OH to remove any offending insects!
