Nose Bleeds

Has anyone any experience of this in their dogs? My four year old border collie is having intermittent, very light nose bleeds (more like blood tinged mucus). The first time I noticed it was when I picked his bowl up after his dinner and there was blood around the edge. That happened again this morning. He's not really sneezing but has sprayed a bit of blood around the house. I would add that he is a 'snuffly' type of dog and occasionally has bouts of reverse sneezing.

The vet is mystified and immediately put him on vitamin K in case it was rat poison but we don't think it is as he's otherwise fit and healthy, eating, pooing well, etc.

He's had an anti-coagulant blood profile done and we're just waiting for the results.

I first thought he must have something up his nose but the vet said she would expect a nasty smelly discharge, not blood, if that was the case. Of course, there is always the possibility of a growth/tumour but we're not going there at this stage!

Thanks.

Apart from hay fever, polyps etc is it possible it could be a fungal infection or a grass seed?

Vet said she would expect a smelly discharge if it was something up his nose, rather than fresh blood. I suppose it's possible he has sneezed violently and burst a blood vessel. If it continues on I think he will have to be investigated further.

Layla, it was Thursday evening just after I fed them, I saw it on his bowl (and the other bowls that he had licked clean!).

Lynn, yes, a vet nurse friend mentioned this yesterday and it does seem a possibility.

He had another one yesterday morning at breakfast and again this morning, with nothing (that I've noticed) in between. Very strange!

I had my dog tested for this. They need to grow a culture.

Sorry SB, I'd not heard of it when I replied. I've just frightened myself googling it so I think I'll wait and see what the vet says when the blood profile is back. He hasn't got any of the other symptoms of aspergillosis so, if it is that, I just hope we've caught it early - the some of the treatments sound horrendous!
