How does your dog react to situations like this .

My wife and her son were fooling around and she got up to chase him and they started play fighting ..(he is 17 btw lol)
Oz jumped up and got in-between them and started doing a deep bark and huffing ,not really aimed at either of them but i do wonder what would have happen if it was for real ..

He was splitting them---if you watch dogs interactimg it happens a lot.

Sometimes they just cut in, sometimes they air snap and sometimes they just get noisy!

I usually stop it because I want the others to play. If the splitter gets too upset and worried I remove them from the situation.

I expect if it was for real the dog would 'side' with the one that appeared the stronger---its called survival!

My Springer used to do this if my Mom pretended to spank me, she would climb up and dig at her arms trying to stop her... She'd eventually lay over her upper body and try to push her away... but then I was only 7 and I was HERS. She would have protected me with her life, but she loved my Mom and didn't want to hurt her either. In retrospect, it waasn't fair for her, but we thought it was funny.

Mine doesn't appreciate it. One of my cousins had a close shave once, I was sat on the floor with Mac right up against me and he was the other side of Mac. He thought it was funny, to keep slapping my arm and after about the fifth attempt Mac just went for his arm. Luckily for my cousin it was just his long sleeved shirt he got and totally missed his skin. He didnt do it again though

If me and Alex play fight the dogs try to join in. We barely argue but last time we did seriously (before the pups) Minnie hid in a cupboard, there was no violence just an arguement but it upset her.

Ted tries to get in-between and barks or if he's got a toy he just runs squeaks it at you and then runs off again The first time he did it i was mucking around with my brother and he went to hit me Ted shot up and started barking it soon stopped him He doesn't like shouting or raised voices though he goes and cowers by the back door.

It is interesting from reading replies that the dogs seem to be able to distinguish between 'play' that they feel is getting OTT and 'real' high tension situations.
