My little girl has got tetanus

My little girl has got tetanus has anyone on here got any experience of this. she started with being sick and had wild eyes so I took her to the vets and they gave her a anti sickness drug and a anti inflammatory. I took her back the next day because her jaw looked funny and she had problems eating and her eyes still looked wild, she also had a slight swelling around her rear toe nail bed so the vet put her on antibiotics. I took her back again because she seemed to be getting stiffer and the whites of her eyes where showing, her expression on her face looked as if she couldn't focus. I was frightened it could be tetanus the vet through with the symptoms it was .so she is on more antibiotics she seems to have stabilised and not got any worse. so I hope we have stopped its progress but I am worried how long the symptoms take she has been the same for 3 days now and her eyes seem a bit softer the whites doesn't seem to be so prominent .the vet said they had only one case in 10 years so it is very rear in dogs I would appreciate any help

Has she been given any anti-toxin? The muscle spasms will take a while to return her expression back to normal. It generally takes a long course of antibiotics (usually penicillin and amoxicillin) and intensive nursing care-affected dogs can lose their ability to regulate body temp and become hyperthermic. You also need to keep her quiet and minimise stimulation, take care to ensure she is able to swallow-sometimes wet food made into 'meatballs' fed by hand are easier.
I have nursed 4 dogs with tetanus and all of them made a full recovery. Healing vibes to your little girl. x

The vet hasn't given her a antitoxin he said it could send her into shock but she is on 2 antibiotics with her being stable no progression of the illness for 3 days is that good I know it will take ages for her to improve

In some cases the antitoxin can cause a hypersensitive reaction but it is fairly rare. Glad your girl is stabilising now x

So sorry your little girl is poorly and hope she recovers soon. Do you know how she contracted Tetanus?

No its is very strange when she got the injury to her nail bed it was thick with snow they reckon its in the ground and gets into the body through cuts and puncture wounds it is very rear in dogs and cats
