USB Help please

When I plug in the photo dongle to the usb, usually the wizard pops up and asks me what I want to do. Now, it makes the noise when I plug it in, but no wizard, and after a moment or two I get the icon at the bottom to 'safely remove hardware' What do I do to start the wizard and download the info???

Any ideas why the wizard has stopped, it worked the other day??

The wizard might have stopped working if there was a check-mark against, 'always take this action' (or whatever the Microsoft wording is) when you did it last time.

If you go to 'My Computer' or Windows Explorer, does the device show up in there as a drive ?

Now, it makes the noise when I plug it in ....
That doesn't sound right

Thanks for the quick reply (you might be saving Lily Laptop from a flying lesson!) The USB is drive E and I can't find it anywhere!?

The noise happens everytime I plug it in and always has, there's a different noise when I remove it too - so I'm pretty sure it's supposed to do that (same sound as when an email lands)

Is it appearing as drive E in Windows Explorer ?

If so, open it and see if you can find your photos.

If not, try it in another USB port (if the laptop has another one).

If it is a Dell laptop, throw it out of the Window - I have one at work which doesn't like any USB memory devices but one. Even Dell Tech support have given up on that one

When I left click the 'remove' icon at the bottom of the puter the box says - Safely remove USB mass storage device - Drive(E

But when I go into explore, there is no E there!!
I've tried using another port and get the same results
Lily is a Toshiba, but she's sure to fly if I throw her hard enough

Just looked again (explorer) and E: was there - clicked to open and get this message -

E:/ is not accessible.
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

This happened to me a few weeks ago Ashlady - it makes the noise but no window pops up asking what you want to do. I did a system restore and it was fine afterwards.

It sounds like a hardware problem

Have you got another PC you can try the device on ?

If it works on that, there is something amiss with the USB ports on the laptop. (This might be physical or it could be driver related - System Restore might make it work again).

Something else worth trying is to leave the device attached and shutdown the laptop. Then restart it with the device still attached.

No its not drastic Ashlady - I do it a lot. It just takes your system back to an earlier time - say last week or a few days ago when it was working properly - only takes about 5 or 10 mins to do and if it doesn't work you can always undo the restoration.

By hardware do you mean the dongle or the puter hardware? (sorry, I am to computers what Pavarotti is to brick laying )

Will try it on OH Laptop in a min

Looks like she (Lily) is off to Doctor Johns again!!

Thanks again for your time Roy, much appreciated x
