Could you manage without a car?

Thinking about this potential petrol strike, and the fact that petrol may eventually be so expensive that cars aren't an option....

Could you do your essential journeys without a car? I'm talking about going to work, taking kids to school, hospital/medical appointments, carers duties etc. I'm leaving shoppping out of it, as I'm assuming people will either revert to shopping locally, or will have their shopping delivered...

I've checked Traveline.info, and it would take me over twice the normal car travel time to get to work in a morning on time on public transport

The shortest journey time involves a bus, 2 trains and over 30mins walking (1hr, 50mins) and the longest is 2 hrs 21mins and that is just bus and walking...

And those are for a 20mile journey...

I don't really have any more essential-type stuff - my GPs is within walking distance, and I don't need to go to the hospital regularly....

No, living where I do, I can't do without a car.

Public transport even for trips to town is too expensive, but the main consideration is that the main hospital is approx 35-38 miles away and I have a son that often has episodes during the night that need medical attention. On a lesser, but still worrying point, my mum is 89 in May and is now more or less housebound. Although my sister is there to look after her, there is the risk that I will need to get over there quickly at any time.

short answer no, however, I have had no car for a year now and I am really struggling TBH. It's a struggle to get to my hospital appointments from work. It's a struggle to get my dogs to the vets, which is 12 miles away. It’s a struggle to go food shopping. It's been a nightmare, But when your insurance company doubles your insurance, I thought well I'll have the last laugh by getting rid of the car. Although it has been a struggle at least I got out of paying £1000 for a years insurance (total rip off, I've never paid that amount since I've been driving)

I have just purchased a car but due to having no log book and tax I cannot drive it until I receive the log book to tax the car. I can't wait to be back on the road again.

Yes I could, easily. My work is a 10-15 minute walk or bike ride away, we have a range of local shops easily within 5 minutes walking distance (supermarket, chemists, opticians, cafes, takeaway restaurants, vets, post office, doctors, etc.) and I live practically next to a station. I never use the bus but there are good bus links here and there is also a taxi firm again 5 minutes away.

Brighton is 10-15 minutes away by train and there is pretty much everything you could need there. Gatwick Airport is 30 minutes by train and the train takes you right into the terminal. The local hospitals are also easily accessible by train then taxi.

I don't have kids, however the local schools are 5-10 minute walk away.

So, definitely not essential for me. I don't use mine much at all to be honest -- it is strictly for pleasure!

I could get to work 4 days a week, but the other 2 I would still need a car, as the Cash and Carry run has to be done.

I can get to the GP/dentist by bus, or a slow long walk.

Hospital is a no go really, it's an 80 mile round trip, not near any stations etc, and I know I wouldn't manage the journey.

Yes I probably could but wouldn't want to. I am in town, so most things are accessible. \I walk to school every day apart from one where we have a class straight after school drop off, but am generally out in the car most days as a lot of the stuff I do with the kids means i need to use the car to get there.
Also Lothian buses here are having huge problems with accepting mums on with buggies which means you can face having to walk home or get off a bus as they refuse to let you on with certain types of buggies even on those that are adapted specifically for buggies. Its an ongoing campaign that the mums are fighting with them, as they have a monopoly on the routes but won't allow non folding buggies on the bus, but for those with more than one child its still n issue as how you are supposed to fold down a buggy with a newborn, a toddler a 5 yr old and bags etc is beyond me, especially when a lot of the time the driver moves off before you are even seated.
So no I wouldn't and probably couldn't do without my car, however I do try not to use it for daft journeys and if weather is good will walk when possible.

We also use the car to t
ake the dog to empty fields at weekends to allow him a good run

Nope, I teach in various places, usually in the middle of nowhere with no bus routs etc. I also live in a village, it does have a doctors and co op but it would cost an arm and a leg to shop there weekly! Although my son goes to school in a taxi and escort, I still have regular meetings to attend there and its a 45 minute car ride and I dread to think how long on public transport!
