Advice for a puppy.

I have a 9 week old springer/lab cross. He sleeps in his crate at night and will happily eat his food in it and go in and out looking for treats. However if I shut him in he whines for a bit then settles until I leave the room, then starts again. In 5 weeks I will be back working 3 days a week a have to leave him alone. I won't crate him all day but can't leave him in any room as they cannot be puppy proofed even the bathroom. I did think about getting a dog play pen. Any advice gratefully received.

Welcome to the forum, how long will he be crated while you work ? TBH I don't like crating for more than a couple of hours, felt dreadful yesterday when I had to go to the hospital and had to leave mine for nearly 6. Wouldn't want to do that too aften.

I will be out all day but definitely wouldn't crate him for that long. I'm just looking for ideas. I will be getting him walked during the day.

Not sure still how long he will be shut in the crate but puppies need to be taken out every 1 to 2 hours or so to be toilet trained. There is lots of advice and info about proper and successful use of crates out there on the web.

You have to get the dog used to it gradually both when you are at home and out.
