Why does no-one want Minnie? (Oldies Club, fostered Herts)
Minnie is a beautiful 10 year old Whippet x Staffordshire Bull Terrier girl who came into Oldies Club care about 8 months ago and has sadly had no interest. She’s a loyal and loving companion and thoroughly deserves to finally find her forever home.
Minnie is in an Oldies Club foster home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.
Settling in: It took Minnie about 3 – 4 weeks to settle at her foster home. This is quite a long time compared to most dogs we take in, but Minnie had an unsettled time after having to be rehomed when her original owner could no longer care for her. This unsettled time included 11 lonely months in private boarding kennels whilst her owner’s family tried to find her a place with a rescue that guaranteed there was no risk of her being put to sleep if she wasn’t rehomed within a certain time. She found that place with the Oldies Club, and 8 months later, she’s still sadly waiting for her permanent home.
Great with children: Beautiful Minnie has proved to be good with children. She was in another foster home for a while and she adored the 14 year old girl there and followed her everywhere. She has also met younger children and been fine with them.
Not good with dogs or cats: Minnie doesn’t like other dogs at all and so she needs to be the only dog in her new home. She will also chase cats and other animals so cannot live with them.
Out and about: Minnie is excellent in the car – she sits in the back and obediently lies down when told. She is also very good on the lead, but she can’t be let off lead as she really doesn’t like dogs or other animals and is aggressive towards them. If she pulls on the lead when wearing a collar, it hurts her throat and she chokes, and so her foster carer has found that a Gencon Halti works best for her. The Halti pulls on the back of her neck rather than her throat. Her foster carer says: She is good on the lead during bike rides, providing she has been to the toilet first as she tends to just stop suddenly to go!
Favourite pastimes: Minnie likes an occasional rawhide chew. On sunny days she loves to lie in the sun. She gets really excited when chasing footballs or tennis balls, especially if someone is chasing her to try to get them off her!
Minnie’s perfect home: Minnie would like a home where she has at least one person around for most of the time. She’s not destructive when left alone, but she doesn’t like to be left for too long. Her foster carer says: She has a lot of energy for an older dog so she needs two daily walks. At the moment she has 45 minutes in the morning and a 20 minute walk or bike ride in the evening. These walks are ideal for her so they shouldn’t be made much shorter. She also thrives on love and attention so a lot of stroking and general love would be beneficial for her.
Health notes: Minnie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. At her vet-check she was found to be generally healthy, but she does have a sensitive throat and so her new owner must not attach a lead to her collar. The foster carer recommends using the Halti on her and this seems a good solution.
Minnie’s foster carer sums her up: Loving; Loyal; Affectionate; Obedient in the home. Minnie is great to be around. The only problem is her aggression towards other animals. This is definitely worth putting up with as she is so good in all other ways. She is never destructive around the house and is very good around all people. She rarely barks unless there is a knock at the door or she sees another animal.
