Puppy Farm

Hi there,

I have just heard of the existence of a puppy farm (from a colleague who actually bought a dog from there last week?!!).

It's probably a stupid question, but is puppy farming illegal as well as unethical? I presume my first port of call is the RSPCA? I've just been shown an advert for some pups of hers on a website, do I tell the people who run the site?

I want to do something about this, I certainly think it's an RSPCA matter, but do you tell the council/police too?

Sorry if I sound dumb, all advice would be appreciated!

Em.x

Tell evertone you can. Puppy farming is illegal. Go to the RSPCA, the police, the council, the Dog's Trust, the papers (local and national).

Please do all you can to get it stopped x

Unfortunatley puppy farming isn't illegal if they have a licence. If they are licenced there is nothing the RSPCA can do. Firstly if you can find out if they're licenced, if they are complain complain and complain a little more to the council that licences them, don't let up. If they're not licenced complain to the RSPCA and the inland revenue.

It would also be worth contacting these people [link removed]

Please don't give up, we need more people like you taking a stand

Back when I was looking for the dog that was to become Pharaoh I visited a 'puppy farm'. There was no way of telling from the picture in the vets, no way of telling from the reputation of the kennels and there was no way of telling when I visited to look at the puppies. Mum was in a lovely crate in the kitchen with all her puppies, it looked for all the world like a beautiful home reared set up. Until I asked to go out the back to see Dad and to see the other dogs I could hear as I pulled up. Out the back was what I describe as a doggy concentration camp. Dogs were in travel crates and rabbit hutches, piled one on another. The large breed dogs were in sheds and chicken wire runs. The stench was appalling and the dogs were in awful shape.

Call the dog warden, call the RSPCA, try to get your friend and others to do the same. I was advised when I called the RSPCA that they sometimes only act if they receive more than one complaint and the dog warden only has authority to insist on an inspection if they have received more than one complaint.

Hi as Paddywhack says if they are licensed then unfortunately they are legal.

I suggest you contact WatersideAction Group they are a group who were set up to fight against puppy farming and tho' based in Scotland I am sure they will be able to point you in the right direction.

Why do you call it a puppy farm? Can you be more specific? If there is cruelty involved you can report it, yes.

I can only go off what I heard from a colleague this morning. She found an advert on a pet sales website for a litter of shih tsu pups (sp?). When they went to view the pups, apparently they were taken to an out building filled with cages and several different breeds of small dogs with litters. This sounded exactly like a puppy farm to me.

The dogs were apparently not socialised at all, and were cowering at the back of their cages. They ended up buying a pup because they 'felt sorry for it.'

Please, before anyone comments - I know exactly what you're going to say. I couldn't begin to comprehend why she didn't give the breeder a piece of her mind, and why she didn't immediately report what she saw either.

However, now that I know about it, I feel obliged to do something if I can at all, I can't bear the thought of dogs being kept in such conditions, it certainly sounds cruel to me. I think I'm going to tell my colleague she needs to make the initial complaint (immediately), as I'm not certain the RSPCA would give priority to my compaint as it's all based on second hand information, and I've not seen it for myself. I've emailed Dogs R Us and Waterside Action Group (Thanks for the links) and whilst I'm waiting for their reply I can be assured that at least something's been done.

Thanks,

Em.
