Phantom Pregnancys, info please.

Shambles has just had her first season and now is having a phantom pregnancy, she is nearly 7 months old.
I've no experience with these as I like boy dogs.
She has been to the vets and he has given us some hormone tablets.
I was just wondering what happens next?!
Any info or past experiences would be great.
Also at what point could we look at having her spayed after the "pregnancy"?

Shambles the day we got her

At christmas

Hi,

Phantom symtoms can include:

Swelling of mammary area and producing milk.

Listlessness, grumpiness, clingyness - general mood change.

Wanting to carry toys/slippers as their babies.

Loss of appetite.

Nesting.

I had a bitch with a phantom pregnancy - she fooled everyone including a breeder who felt her tum and said we had some good pups there (much to my horror as I didn`t see how she could have...). Then after the time she would have whelped she suddenly went back to normal. We did get her spayed later.

Oil of Evening Primrose is very good for sore breasts, we used it on Bron when she phantomed. Also make sure she doesnt have milk.

Thanks for the replies.

Inca, I can't remember the name, will check later and let you know.

She has slight swelling of the mammary area and is being very loving (normally quite independant) and keeps going and curling up in corners on her own.

Morganstar, why shouldn't she have milk?

Smeags had her first season at six months old, she had a phantom two months later, I find that if you give them lots of excercise and things to do it helps to stop them getting broody.

Also, lots of running will help get rid of her milk.

Some bitches produce milk during a phantom some may not , She may or may not retire to her bed , And she will become very affectionate and may even gaurd a teddy quite fiercely as though its her puppy , She should become back to her normal self in about two to three weeks of starting her phantom, You can help her come back to normal quicker by reducing her water intake ,and feed her a less carbohydrate meals ,Remove the toys in which she has become to feel as her babys , give her more excersize and dont encourage her when she mothering behaviour ,or give her sympathy when she is doing this ,
As she is only 7months old she seems very young to be haven a phantom, but i would be wary of her around young children as they can become snappy when haven a phantom if the younger kids go near where she has chosen as her nesting area .
If her signs are really intense and she is producing loads of milk , Id speak with your vet to get some tablets ,and advice ,
She may be spayed once she is in anoestrus .
Your vet will beable to advise you better on this ,Its usually can be done midway between first and second seasons ,
Hope that helps xxdk
