Hip Dysplasia

My 3 year old dog has just been diagnosed with HD. Luckily we caught it early, he was clicking from his back end but not showing any discomfort so I played safe and had him x-rayed anyway and good job I did!

The vets have put him on seraquin, for life (thank goodness for insurance!!!)

Anyway I was wondering if there were any alternative medications he could be on? I know about glucosamine, I take it for my hips!!, but I have heard about green lipped mussel extract and didn't know if that would benefit him?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks

So sorry to hear this Dixie Chick .

I have heard that the green lipped Mussel is great, all fish oils are good I think aswell.

I am a big fan of Ttouch and that can really help some dogs mobility, when they have stiffened up and are sore, I used it alot with my elderly dog as she grew older. Also I applied a warm wheat ba to her after a walk to help stop her stiffening up.

Big hugs to the beautiful Morse, and I hope he is as well as can be expected.

Hope you are well too. Suzixxx

My dog, Teagan has HD and athritis.
She was diagnosed before she turned 2 years old, and the vet told me she would need medication for life, and hardly any exercise.
I disagreed, and said she was too young for medication, and it's not fair to stop exercise.
I then changed vets!

I got some advice on here, and took her off the medication, and put her onto supplements.
I saw an orthopaedic surgeon, who told me to keep on doing whatever I was doing, as her muscle tone was excellent, and this supports her hips.
She has as much exercise as a 'normal' dog.

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise, if you can get to a hydro pool, if not, swimming in a safe body of water is great too.
As for supplements, Teagan has Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Omega 3 oils (in tablet/capsule form).
She also has a liquid called 'Synflex', which contains glucosamine etc (she has half a dose of that)

I also now feed her Arden Grange, as it contains glucosamine, and I have lowered her dose of Synflex - so if she has a bad day, I can give her more.

The way I saw it, was that if she starts mediction now, and it gets worse, apart from hip replacements (which she is a candidate for), I can't do anything for her.
She is in no pain, and no one ever guesses she has anything wrong with her.
The only sign is that she swings her hips when she walks.

Haven't really anything to add, except to back up whats been said and thankfully you caught it early enough to help her and prolong her life... our last setter had H/D and the last months were pretty awful.. wish we knew now what we knew then
