Training my puppy..... any help? (on recall & other behaviours using the clicker)

im clicker training sasha. ive taught her 'sit' 'lie' and nearly roll over.

i want to teach her paw and others.

i am taking things slowly but i want to get the information on how best to do this.

also she is having trouble with recall. it could be because there are so many interesting things to see, or just that she doesnt want to.

any help/suggestions?

thanks in advance

I'm sure some of the more experienced puppy trainers will be able to give more advice but I do know I looked through this site for lots of useful hints and tips.

Our pup is 6months old and recall is selective to say the least! Fine within the constraints of the house/garden and to be fair outside to until that is a rabbit/cat/squirrel or bird gets in the way - luckily we're always one step ahead of her and the 30 foot lead prevents her going off!

Our trick was to be armed with lots of very tasty treats (something like liver cake), bucket loads of patience and baby steps.

Good luck

Hi Sasha, We are clicker training our pup. Must say it has been very effective. Recall is a very difficult one for any dog to learn as like you said, there is always something more interesting to be doing.

I would suggest either finding a local trainer or buying a book. I have found books great for teaching basic obideince. I think there is a book thread on here, which you can see the feedback on.

hi sorry for my late reply. last time i tried coming on the site was down.

thanks for the links. i have bookmarked them and ill have a look in a minute.

im tring to get her used to being left alone atm. which is noisey to say the least lol.

i know it is going to be hard but im going to try my best to get her well socialised and well trained. i really want her to do flyball/agillity when she is older.

ill have a look for the book reccomendations as suggested.

any tips and help you can give me is much apprieciated by me and sasha

Hellooo! We're clicker training little Bongo with great success (so far ) We're enrolled in an excellent puppy class (we found it through APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers), and we're finding it really helpful to see the professionals in action so we know what we're aiming for.

As far as tricks are concerned, I've just found this really cool site which explains how to teach loads of things:

http://www.thedogtricks.com/
(hope that's ok Azz )

I think I'm going to have a go at "shake paw" and "high five" with Bongo

We've been successful in recall around the house and garden, and now I'm waiting for the 30ft lead I've ordered so we can start from scratch at the beach. One of the problems I've found with recall is getting the treats right: not interesting enough (her usual food) and she won't bother coming back, too interesting (smoked cheese!) and she won't leave my side to practise
