Fridge thermostats

I'm unsure about my fridge temperature.
The thermostat is marked from 1 - 6 - MAX.
Which way must I turn it to make it cooler? Not sure if higher is colder or lower is.
Is MAX, maximum temperature or maximum chill

Hi Jenny if it is like mine max is a higher temperature and lower is colder.
Try it and see, you can't get above 6 anyway it seems.
Mine is set at 5 which apparently is the recommended temperature for fridges.

Mine is on 7 because it started getting pools of water in the bottom during the hot spell we had, wasn't sure what way to go but decided to try it on 7 and it seems to have worked

Thanks Mini, so is 5 the temperature or just a random setting marked by the manufacturers.
Mine is set on 2 but everything seems really cold.
Somewhere I've got a fridge thermometer. I must look it out.

Mine is set at 3, if I put it above that things start to freeze Its 16 years old though so temp settings are probably different now.xx

Rightiho I will turn it to 3 and see what happens, I have found the thermometer too so I will see what that tells me.

with all the fridge/freezers I've owned the HIGHER the number, the COLDER the temperature. MAX being maximum coldness. Setting it to Zero is like turning it off.

It may be that new fridges in UK are different these days. Most over here now don't have numbers they have 'warmer' and 'cooler' with graduations on the dial.

Best way to test the internal temp of a fridge or freezer is with an inexpensive fridge thermometer. Easy way to find out if up or down is warmer or colder is to adjust it quite a few notches and wait to see if you hear the motor kick in to work to make it colder.

If you google what number is colder on a fridge temperature knob or similar. You will find the vast majority of replies will tell you the higher the number the colder the temperature. The numbers are not 'temperatures' and MAX usually means maximum coldness (if you have min or max and not numbers)

I am guessing (going by the number of people who have asked this question on the web) that they've started using COLDER and WARMER because so many didn't know! Most people in UK probably keep it somewhere in the middle and hardly ever decrease or increase it.

It is dead easy to find out if you live where it is as hot as it is here! We need 'beefier' FFs too. Some brits bring their with them and are dismayed to find they are 'not up to the job' out here.
