How many of you use longlines when teaching recall?

When you first get a puppy and you teach the puppy recall do you ever use a longline, or just take the leap of faith and let them off?

I ask because alot of people recommend use longlines until the pup has a reliable recall. I've always just let the pup off from day one when they are in the "I need to stay with you" phase. And worked on recall that way. I've never had a proble with doing it this way (apart from asbo's recent bird issues) and I will probably continue this with the next pup.

So how many of you just let them off and go, or do you use the safety net of the longline?

I never use lines, I have my pups on the ground off lead from Day 1, I use their insecurity to my advantage.

Ive never used a long line either, and they are always off lead from day one aswell, like SB like to work on their insecurity and like them to know I'm the best thing since sliced bread

I did pretty much the same as SB. I had him on the lead in the field where I dog walk and a very wise old lady came over and said to let him off now, and as SB said use his insecurity to my advantage.

Bless her, she said " I'll stay with you and my dog will show him what to do "

I had Hocus off lead from the first day he could go a walk.
As he got a little older he started to get more confident and went racing up to a couple of people so out came the long line while I worked on recall some more.
I did find after a while I was using it even when I didn't need to so I then decided it was staying at home and he has been fine since, think I used it for almost a month.

Long line here but we're talking older pup/adolescent and no insecurity to use to my advantage. With a young puppy it'd be off leash and I'd be working on recall from day one.

Don't use one but would if I thought I needed to and would recommend.

If they don't recall when I ask I bolt off in the other direction.

"It depends" but as Sarah has said, it's something I would use in adolescence stage, more when some pups are less likely or are not responding to the Recall rather than actual baby puppy stage.

I've never used one either, all mine are off lead as early as possible in life. Even my rehomes and fosters have been offlead by some point on their first walk with me.
