I read somewhere that the solution was dropped onto a t.v remote control and the plastic melted

Oh, I need to have a think about that then.

When I worked in a rescue in Cyprus, all the dogs wore these white plastic flea/tick collars - are they chemicals too?

(sorry to gatecrash your thread Kirsty )

The dogs still got random ticks, but not fleas.
I'll see if I can find what they were - they has a kind of powdery coating.

I have been using Diatom earth for my lot. It is not herbal but is a natural dust...no fleas as yet and it has worked on my cat...and he has the hardest fleas to shift! Will see how it fairs now the weather is warming up tho.

Hi kirsty
I make a flea spray that is in an aromatherapy book I have. It's 6 drops geranium oil,5 drops lavendar oil and 4 drops tea tree oil. It's best to use pure essential oils. Mix that with 100ml water for prevention or 30ml to treat fleas. Spray it into their brushed up coats once a week. I've never had a flea using this and they smell lovely, even when they are wet. Hope that helps

garlic is good. either sprinkle a bit of powder on the food, or give a capsule once a week, fleas dont like the smell it gives off so they stay away
