Yearly Vaccinations

What are people's thoughts on this?,as I know there
are some who don't think it's necessary to vaccinate
yearly,I have always done it,basically because I think
it's the right thing to do,I would'nt want to see my dogs
suffer, but am interested in what others think and do.

I just do the puppy jabs. I will be leaving it as long as possible in the future too, as Rio had a nasty reaction to her first jab at eight weeks. I don't booster as I don't think it is necessary, and may be detrimental to my dog's health. My Mum lost a cat after having her jabbed. She had a seizure and died. The vet said it was a coincidence . I am not convinced.

My dogs don`t have the annual booster. If you google it you will find a lot of arguments for and against. You just have to make your own mind up.
I don`t give the boosters because I reasoned that if the antibodies were in the blood, they were in the blood. Why would they `wear out`? I have my children vaccinated once and that`s supposed to last all their life (apart from certain ones like tetanus). Why doesn`t that apply to other mammals?
For the ones that do only last a short time, like Lepto - the manufacturers themselves say it only lasts 6 months and only covers certain strains - so it`s a lottery anyway. And Lepto vaccs can produce bad reactions.
To me, vaccinations are a calculated risk which I am prepared to take. Annual boosters are not.
However, I`m sure a pro-booster person will say the opposite.

I do puppy vaccines at 8 weeks, and 12 weeks, and boost at 6 months and a year. I wont give a rabies shot, as it is extremely rare/non-existent in my part of the world, and the vaccine is dangerous... besides, my dogs are never out of my sight. Parvo and distemper will be given again at 3yyrs and 5yrs then never again. I never board my dogs, so dont give bordetella (sp). My vet agrees with my choice and supports this completely (including providing paperwork if needed for training classes).

I have my dogs boosters done about every 18 months but with trepidation. I have heard of bad reactions to them (my friends dog has auto immune which could have been after her vaccs, cant be proved) but as I show two of mine and meet lots of dogs from all over the country I prefer to feel safe.

If I did not have to have them done I would`nt, but as they go into kennels once or twice a year, I have no choice,

Otherwise I would have them Titre tested .

Ditto!

I don't like to vaccinate older dogs though, and didn't have Kingsley done for about 4 years until last year, when he unexpectedly had to go into kennels.

I would like to see more titer testing done. At least here all the states now only require rabies every 3 years. The annual shots many required had no science behind them.

I lost two dogs to auto immune disease caused by thier yearly vaccs and never again would I want to see dogs suffer like they did again.
My current 2 dogs had thier puppy vaccs and I have titre tested each year since. Milo my JRT has never needed another vaccination as his levels have always been very high and Shady has had one booster but her readings have been so high since its been ridiculous.
I would never vaccinate blind again without knowing if my dog definetly needed it or not.
Milo because of his allergies cannot be vaccinated anymore anyway even if his levels drop to need one in the future.

Hi Cally many vets (my own included ) us a vaccine which covers a dog for a number of canine illness for a period of three years..
http://www.future-of-vaccination.co....-intervals.asp

If you intend having a booster for your dog I would discuss three year vaccines with your vet.

Also be aware if your dog is insured, some insurance companies insist on dogs having regular boosters or the insurance may become invalid. If you don't have your dog regularly vaccinated it is wise to check your insurance for details of this.
