Do you mean Betnovate? (A type of medicine called a corticosteroid - which are generally used for reducing inflammation)

I have had to use it in the past of Saffy for a rash on her neck. I only had to use it for a few weeks though and sparingly, as it is believed to weaken skin.

The reason I asked is that it has made Ava's fur turn black

hi Sweep I have used Betnovate cream and liquid on children with eczema but not on dogs, it was fine on the childrens hair (I had to put some on patches on the scalp) and their hair did not turn black .
If in doubt ring the vet and ask him

Hi there
Betnovate is a steroid cream which can affect the tissues underneath the skin. I have used it both on my self and at work ( am a vet nurse) It turns my skin yellow after prolonged use ( allergies). I've never heard of it turning existing hair or fur a different colour but have heard of it changing the colour of new growth. Was the area naked of hair when you started to apply it?
You need to be very sparing with any steroid based cream or ointment as they do 'thin' the skin after a while which in turn affect the follicles and hair growth.
Hope this helps

Just another thought. One thing that does discolour an area of hair, is the dog licking. If the dog is constantly licking the sore or affected area that will affect the colour of both the hair and the skin. It doesnt so much go black as very very dark reddy/brown colour. That may be more likely, depending on where the area is of course ( if its on top of her head then I'm obviously completely wrong!!!)
