With the rough/wire hair they look like teddy bears...

I love Border collies but I will admit a particular soft spot for the Bouvier des Flandres, I used to have a cross Bouvier /st Bernard and they huge but wonderful dogs.

If I was 20 years younger, my first choice would be a Tibetan Mastiff.

At my age though if I wanted a working dog I'd have a Giant Schnauzer because they're such easy dogs to train and loads of fun to own!

Having said that I'm quite happy with my Shar-Pei which although they're now classed as a utility breed still retain many of their original working dog traits.

Jagdterrier! I should savour these puppy days but I'm so impatient for her vaccines to be done so we can get started!

Deerhound based lurchers - statuesque and loyal to a fault these dogs are a joy to own. Very hardy and good doers, will work all day or lie contentedly at your feet before a blazing fire, whichever you choose. Generally they are very good natured if a little aloof with strangers (no bad thing in these days of dog thieves) but have the very devil of a temper if roused to action.
Terriermon - despite your impatience to get going with your pup - working wise, which is a perfectly natural desire. I would warn against doing anything of a working nature (except obedience of course) until 6 months of age, certainly never before a full set of adult teeth are in place. They should never be entered below ground until a minimum of twelve months old, at the very earliest, no matter how "forward" your pup is. Despite the boldness of working terrier pups it is very easy to overface them when young and ruin them for life, or give them easily acquired bad habits.

German Shepherd Dog.
The Metropolitan Police say:
"We will look at everything else, but we have got no plans to move away from German shepherds." The Met spends up to £3,000 a year on each of around 200 working dogs.
