Goldie ~ Darling Elderly Lady - 12yo Fawn Greyhound
GOLDIE
**UPDATED: JULY 2013**
Location: Foster home in Norfolk, UK.
Key Points: Very undemanding, just wants to doze and relax, friendly, affectionate, fine with other dogs, ok to live with older dogs, housetrained, ok to be left for short periods, just wants a loving home with a soft bed and daily TLC.
Dear Goldie is a 12 year old greyhound girl who really has done everything a greyhound can except be part of a loving family home. She has spent all of her 12 years in racing kennels, has raised a staggering 39 pups, and we feel no one else is more deserving of a peaceful home than Goldie. She has the sweetest wee face and gentle expression.
~ Personality ~
Generally: Calm, affectionate, friendly, quietly confident, non-plussed, relaxed and very undemanding.
Well dear Goldie is just about perfect, bless her heart. All she wants from life is some peace and quiet, and that’s all she asks for. She is friendly and quietly confident in herself and very happy to meet strangers, both human and canine alike. She does enjoy a bit of fuss and is learning to ask for more and generally interact with her foster mum.
By far the biggest love in Goldie’s life though is a soft squishy duvet! 12 years in kennels is a very long time, and Goldie is obviously truly relishing the soft warm comforts of a home. She would very happily stretch out and doze all day long, and is a very undemanding lady. She is a grand old dog who deserves plenty of TLC and general spoiling for the remainder of her days.
~ Medical Issues ~
Goldie came to us a little bit on the lean side, and we are hoping she will put on some weight soon. Her coat is in very good condition. She has recently had a dental to remove all the bad teeth, and fingers crossed this help pick her up. She has been checked over by a vet and found to be otherwise quite healthy for her 12 years.
~ In the Home ~
Generally: Excellent in the home, ok to be left with and without company. Likes peace and quiet, LOVES her bed.
Goldie has been in her foster home for about a month, and has adapted amazingly well. She has now gotten the idea of housetraining, though does sometimes need reminding to actually get up from her bed! She is fine with both sharing with her greyhound foster sibling and settling on her own, just as long as she has as warm bed she is fine with anything. She is learning the basic house rules and understands the basics such as her name and ‘leave it’ etc.
Goldie would do best in a quiet household with or without another older dog for company. At her age we wouldn’t like to see her hassled by a puppy or very young children, she craves the peace and quiet so very much. Goldie would be an excellent companion for an elderly owner who wants a canine friend to potter around with on a daily walk and settle down with infront of the fire. Though she is fine to be left alone, we wouldn’t like to see her left for several hours every day simply because at her age, we feel she should be cuddled and coddled for her remaining days.
~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Polite, confident and generally friendly with other dogs, will just ignore if not in the mood!
Goldie is fine with other dogs regardless of size & shape, and can take or leave them. She shares her space just fine and is quietly confident when meeting new dogs out on walks. As mentioned, we don’t feel she would be suitable to live with a young puppy who may harass her into play, but Goldie would be an excellent, undemanding companion for another older pooch. She is not cat friendly.
~ Out and About ~
Generally: Quiet, calm, potters along, only pulls a bit if sees cat, good traveller, not overly plussed by traffic.
At her age Goldie will not need a huge amount of exercise, but we would like to see her getting out to stretch her legs once or twice a day. She enjoys her walk and potters happily along beside you. She can pull a bit on the lead if she sees a cat or squirrel, but she is not overly strong and generally just trundles along, smelling the roses so to speak.
Goldie is fine in the car and is polite when meeting other dogs. She will simply ignore overly excited dogs and really just says hi if she feels like it at that moment. Older ladies can't be bothered with the activities of young hoodlums, after all!
~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly.
