8 week old puppy humping

My friends 8 week old PWD is already humping people I know it's normal behaviour but I've never seen it in a dog so young. I'm guessing he's far too young for it to be caused by hormones. I want to provide them with an explanation and an action plan before some plonker tries to convince them that it's dominance

What causes it? Is it just an innate behaviour? Excitement?

How best to handle it? Time outs? Or just treat it like jumping up and remove yourself and ignore him?

Nothing to do with sex
Nothing to do with dominance

Just a symptom of over excitement.

distract
Remove person or object

puppies of both sexes do it and they do it in the nest.

Thanks. I'll pass that on. I'm know they are keen to stop it because although he is small now, he's going to be a reasonable sized dog and they don't want him knocking the small children over

My GSP was humping when I brought him home at 12 weeks, it happened every time he got excited. I just distracted him and got him to stop, now at 17 weeks there is no humping at all

Mine's a girl and she's always done it. But only to her stuffed toys. Her favourite is the stuffed draught stopper.

We've noticed she does it more if told she cannot do something else!

I did read that you should not let them hump stuffed toys as this is a sign of aggression and dominance.

But to be honest, we find it so funny and she is not in the least aggressive or dominant.
