Mine are:

Choose your dog food wisely - stay away from foods that are high in preservatives/additives/flavourings... try to stick to natural food and if possible ones that have no added sugar (or sweeteners).

Choose your treats wisely! - natural home cooked chicken is much better than packets of chemical filled, preserved treats

Exercise well - follow your breed guidelines and get as much of the exercise recommended for your breed... it's good for you too!

Play mentally stimulating games - this will keep your dogs mind healthy too

Have fun! Play games, do some dog training or perhaps think about one of the other dog sports out there... apart from being lots of fun they'll be a good workout for you and your dog

Mine would be:

1)Plenty of excercise.

2)Good diet which suits your particular dog as some types/brands dont agree with all dogs.

3)Visual checkover by you-the owner for sign of any upcomming problems.

4)Boosters by vet.

5)Keep the bonding between you all going throughout your lives.Simple games like throwing balls are great for this!

5 top tips for keeping your dog fit and slim.

1) If you are buying a puppy (as opposed to a rescue dog)make sure the parents of the puppy have had all the appropriate health tests for that particular breed.
Also choose a good reliable breeder who takes good care of their dogs ,if the dam was correctly fed and cared for when in whelp the puppies have a better chance of growing into healthy adult dogs.

2) Good food is particularly important to ensure puppies grow fit and strong and build good bones, poor feeding can lead to health problems later in life . Make sure your dog is well fed throughout its life and don't feed an adult dog on unsuitable food or tip bits filled with sugar and additives .

3) Exercise your dog daily according to the dogs age to keep it fit in body and mind, short walks everyday are better than the occasional long walk. Daily exercise should include lots of play and mental stimulation to prevent your dog from getting bored and destructive.

4) Check your dog over daily, it only takes five minutes and a small problem spotted early can prevent a more serious problem developing. This will also get your dog used to being handled, an important consideration should future medical treatment and handling by a vet be required.

5) Give your dog lots of love and human/doggy companionship, dogs are born in a litter and were not designed for a life of solitude.

1) If buying a puppy get the healthiest one you can. Buy only from ethical breeders who have done all the necessary health checks and care about their particular breed rather than the money they can earn from them.

2) Feed a diet that is suitable to your dog.

3) Exercise that is appropriate to your dog's age and condition.

4) Train your dog so it's company is always a pleasure to have and you will be able to relax and enjoy him.

5) Give him the love and attention he deserves.
