Rockys first off lead run in a public place!

It was a gorgeous day today and as usual we took Rocky to the park However we normaly keep him on Lead as there are loads of kids and other dogs but today we found an enclosed unused area which I think they rotate every few years for bowls - so we went in locked the gate behind us and let him go! he loved it! So glad we found it as I am sure he'd run off if I let him off lead in an open public place (well untill he is trained that is).
Sad thing is I didnt take the camera

Its scary the first time you let them off the lead. I did not think Star would come back.

No, not until she was ready. Next time I took my secret weapon, my 6 year old son. She sticks to him like glue

thats good u have a secret weapon.. Rocky does not, not even treats! (and he doesnt get many either really!), but he was actually quite good, probably because he was a little unsure as to why he got all this freedom other than in his 'home' - really glad I found it tho, I hope they dont stop us using it and it's not like I wouldnt pick his poo up or anything

He hasnt got a squeaky toy bcos they r not very tough and he would rip it apart in minutes,,, do u know of any really tough ones?

ok, dont tell Alison this but I've been using the Clicker as a recall tool! I click it about 5 times quickly and it gets his attention! then I treat him when he comes, i suppose i'm not misusing it then really?

Hi Azz,

Has he got a toy he adores above all others a ball, kong, pull toy anything?

If so go buy another identical does not have to be the same colour though
Then practice in the garden enclosed area throwning and getting him to come back, by bribing him with the other which of course you have kept with you
He comes back with the one you throw the other he drops the first chases and returns with the seconds and so on. Then transfer this to the park

Also try puting him on the lead randomly so he does not come to associate the lead with going away from the beloved park/open area.

Oh another tip try sitting or crouching down nothing interests your dog more than you doing something unusual

Thanks Kazz! U saying that, he does have a fave toy.... but it's ripped! (spongy bits now coming out) It was an 'Ancol' soft triangle type thing, he wrecked it within the first hour! But I might try and get another one and only let him play with it whilst I am there...

One tip - find one buy 10. You'll never know how many you loose in a big park
