Curly Blue – He’s forever catching bubbles! (Oldies Club, fostered Devon)

March 2011 – Blue will need a temporary foster home for about a month soon – are you in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset or Avon and able to help? If so please contact rehome@oldies.org.uk

Blue is an adorable 8 year old Rottweiler who came into Oldies Club care back in June 2010. Lovely Blue has a fabulous temperament and yet he is still waiting for someone to offer him a new home. Below, we’ve included some new photos of Blue, a short video of him playing his favourite game, and some new information about him. If you’re looking for a large, affectionate dog who loves playing games, Blue could be the boy for you…

Blue’s background: Blue came into our care because his owners were emigrating to warmer climes where they felt that Blue would be unhappy with the heat. He is in an Oldies Club foster home in Plymouth, Devon, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.

Settled quickly: Blue has proved to be a perfect houseguest. He settled within a few days and is clean in the house. He is content to be left for a few hours on his own.

Lovely temperament: Blue is a gentle giant who is easy going and good natured. He is an affectionate boy and loves attention. He is also very obedient and will sit and lie down on command. He tries to sit on your lap and will also creep onto your bed and snuggle down if given the chance! Blue has long hair, which is fairly unusual for his breed. He loves having his long hair brushed.

Very playful: Blue is such a playful lad. His favourite toy is a mirror! He will chase and pounce on the reflections. His foster carers say that it’s very funny to watch him. He also likes his foster carers to play with him with a torch – he chases the light. They tell us: You can’t pick up your mobile without him thinking you’re about to play his favourite game!! Every time we point a camera at him now he knows it’s a light and he’s bouncing around waiting to chase instead of posing!!! Blue also likes to play bubbles, as you can see in the video below!

Out and about: Blue enjoys walks and he walks well on his lead. His foster carers tend to keep him on the lead as this is what he is used to and he has recently been diagnosed with arthritis in his neck and spine so is sometimesa bit grumpy with dogs that he thinks might hurt him. He was previously very good with other dogs though so he’s not an aggressive dog; he just doesn’t want to be hurt. Blue is very well behaved in the car but he tends to suffer with travel sickness.

Good with children and cats: Blue gets on well with his fosterers’ teenage children and their friends. Any children in his new home would need to be about 10+ years old, so that they are old enough to understand not to hurt his sensitive neck and back area. Blue has lived with a cat in the past and so we assume he would be able to do so again, given careful introductions. He spends hours watching the caged rabbits and gerbils at his foster home. When carefully introduced to them, he just wanted to eat them, so he isn’t small-furry friendly!

Probably best as an only dog: Blue has generally been good with other dogs and we previously thought he would be fine to live with a dog. However, since he’s been diagnosed with arthiritis, he’s not been so happy to have dogs around him. He would probably be best as the only dog in his new home, unless the other dog was very calm.

Health notes: Blue is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and flea and worm treated. He has recently been diagnosed with having arthritis in his neck and spine and is on medication for this which is keeping him mobile and comfortable. He is still as affectionate and loving as ever, but he does shy away if you try to hug his neck.

Foster carer’s summary: Blue loves attention and really enjoys playing with his mirror and with lights. He is a very loveable dog with a fabulous character.

If you can offer Blue a permanent home, please refer to our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club rehoming co-ordinator as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk
Telephone: 0844 586 8656

He can be rehomed anywhere in the UK, subject to a satisfactory home visit, but note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet him.

This entry replaces Blue’s original dated 6 July 2010.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
